Upgrade tactics advice sought

Hello,

Can any of you help me with some upgrade advice please?

My parents have the Sky World package, they've had it for years so are
out of contract. They have so much trouble trying to record things
using a VCR that they've given up even trying, so I think that they'd
probably find Sky+ rather useful. Actually I'd probably find it quite
useful too since I spend the odd week at their place in the middle of
nowhere (going out of my mind with boredom) house-sitting while they're
away. This is one of those weeks...

Given that their subscription is quite high, how likely is it that
they'd be able to squeeze an upgrade to Sky+ and for what cost? Is it
unheard of to get a free upgrade to Sky+? I realise that they can go
for the £49 upgrade route but I think that offer is only if you also
take Multiroom (with the additional subscription), which they wouldn't
need. Are Sky flexible at all when it comes to upgrading? What happens
if you ring up to cancel the contract, do they shower you with offers to
stay?

I know I need to ring customer services to find out, but I just want to
be prepared before doing so.

Thanks for any help,

Simon.

Introduce a friend and they can get the Sky+ for £49.

They will pay nothing for the service so only the installation cost is
an issue. However, are they aware that their existing digibox can
control recordings on most VCRs?

Yes. Basically you just need to ring and moan about having to pay so
much to get a Sky+. Ask to cancel if they don't come up with a new
Sky+ installed for £49 as the cancellations people will offer you this
price when you get put through to them.

They're probably not aware of the possibility, but if you're talking
about the SCART control pin signal method then it won't work with their
"antique" VCR. Even if they were to change their VCR (more more likely
upgrade to recordable DVD) which did support it, I have a feeling they'd
still find it too much like hard work to remember to put in a disc and
set it to standby (or whatever's required). The simplicity of choosing
programs from the planner and not having to bother whether the unit is
on or in standby seems ideal for them.

Thank you, I'll suggest they give it a try.

Fair enough.
