Sky Plus Problem

Lately whenever I press pause or try to rewind a live TV programme
neither work until I turn off the box and do a reset. If I press pause
nothing happens, a few seconds later the picture pauses but the box
crashes, the same with rewind. Everything works fine again when I do a
reset. Anyone come across this problem?

Reload the software.
Try swapping the two LNB feeds over at the back of the Sky+.
If that doesn't do anything then try a planner rebuild.
If that doesn't help do a full system reset (this will erase your
recordings).

Does anybody have a Sky+ box working without problems??

Ours is driving me up the wall - it turned itself off, wiped the planner and
therefore everything recorded and set to record.

It took 3 attempts to rest the system from the installer's menu to work.

Since then 2 failed recording and constantly freezing during playback so I
have to backup and skip forward a minute.

Is it crap software? Is my box on the way out? Is it the hard drive?

Shall I pay £65 for them to visit or just get a new box on Ebay?

Two other people we know are having constat memory problems and freezing
etc.

Yes, mine. I learned my lesson over a year ago when the hard drive died
with stuff I really, really wanted to keep. So I fitted a new drive,
and here's the critical part, some extra cooling. The drives just cook
themselves into an early grave, with all the problems you describe as
symptoms of what's about to happen. Since I fitted the extra cooling,
two whisper quiet fans fed from an external power supply, I have not had
any major faults in over a year (just the odd EPG hang which a quick
reboot solves, maybe about four of those).

Regards

Mark

Thanks for the feedback Mark - are you able to tell me what to go and buy?

Both hard drive and the fans.

TIA

An issue of cooling affected our old sky digibox (normal box). We have one
of those TV cabinets with glass doors on. The box kept freezing all the
time. Turned out the box had no room to breathe in the cabinet. When we
took the doors off the box was fine.

Both hard drive and the fans.

Got the fans and PSU from RS, but people like Maplins supply the same
things. They're only standard 40mm 12v PC fans. I dive them at 7.5v,
slowing them down quite a bit, but also making them very quiet. One
sucks out (where the original fan sat) and the other blows in through
the removed 'expansion' plate. Stuck 'em on with double-sided sticky
pads cut into quarters on each corner of the fan. Haven't fell off in
over a year.

The drive's another matter. Any Maxtor drive should work but you'll be
very hard pressed to find a 5200rpm 40Gb drive anywhere these days. But
I've fitted a 7200rpm 80Gb with no problems. Samsung drives are also
supposed to be compatible. They just need to be standard IDE with the
jumpers set to cable select.

You'll find when you first power down your STB and open it up you
probably won't be able to touch the original drive, it will literally
be too hot to touch. After fitting the extra fans it will only be warm
to the touch.

You'll also need to get hold of a Security Torx bit (standard Torx won't
do) to open up the STB and release the drive.

Take a look here for loads of info on the process of drive replacement:

I don't have a solution I'm afraid, but I have had this problem ever since
they updated the software a few weeks ago (when the planner changed to a sky
blue colour). I am sure I saw it suggested this was a known problem that
lots were suffering from, but I can't remember where I read it....

This is either a drive problem or a problem on LNB input 2. Probably
the drive.

Try a full reset from the service menu. If that fails you could pull
the drive, format it in a PC and run the maker's diagnostic software
on it.

It is a problem with the new software. Mine has the same problems. As
suggested earlier in this thread just do a rebuild and it will work again -
for a while!
