copy protection dvd recording

I've just bought a dvd recorder and have been messing around, getting
used to it. I bought some dvd-rw today and tried a few bits so i could
delete one or the other, just making sure they worked and was
recording one of the documentary channels. I happened to get
interested in the prog, a thing about off road vehicles and it
recorded for about 6 minutes then came up with interrupted signal,
copy protected image or something like that. I had heard of this
happening on PPV movies and wasn't concerned, but it worries me that
it might start happening elsewhere. Any ideas if and how to find out
if stuff is genuinely protected and how to make sure i don't go losing
recordings after a few minutes, which would obviously be a waste of
time?

ah, the simple tape recording days :O(

Quite strange that one Paul, Usually soonever I press record my Recorder
comes up *Material is copy protected* or *cannot copy* (Unless I have my
Macrovision remover connected)
I have had an occasion *record error* when Skys signal has screwed up which
I must admit is something that did'nt happen with VHS Tape!
Skys programmes usually have a *C* I think displayed when protected from
recording.

Of course there's nothing stopping broadcasters *slipping one on* every so
often even though the EPG says it is'nt (say if the programme being shown is
being put on DVD by the channel ! )

DVD Recorder = Worst purchase I have ever made. That is all.

Oops!, Someones bought a crappy one here?

Surely not the cheap un's that will only let you play the discs recorded on
the machine and not on any others.
Perhaps you prefer the *disc filling* fancy menus as on commercial DVD's?

The amount of absolute pap they put on those just so DVD Shrink has to work
overtime on an hour and a half movie is ridiculous!

Perhaps waiting for the phoneline connection type that check your not
playing an imported movie so the Film companies can kill the machine for
doing so??

In the manual for the (sharp) recorder it states that if a protected
IMAGE appears it will pause until the image has gone. I don't think it
paused, or rather it paused but then stopped. I have run the disc a
few times on other sky channels after, just to see if I could force it
to do it again but nothing doing so far. I hope it is a glitch but I
agree about tapes and, more concerning, is it possible they're pushing
digital on us because it's so easy to control what we can and can't
record?

They're weird aren't they? I bought this really so I could transfer
some family home video to dvd and save the damage the tapes have
already got from getting worse. I could record them onto another VHS
but then they degrade again. As it has a tape deck too I'm hoping that
it'll get me through until they really make these things as usable as
they say they are.

The above *has* to be an urban myth.

Apart from anything else, film companies do not have the power to
dispense punishment for copyright violations - that's the court's job.

Also, killing the machine would surely be regarded as criminal damage.

I have two Panasonics wouldn't be without them, must say I find them a doddle
to use.

I'm getting more used to this thing (I've had two or three sharp VHS
over the last few years and had got very used to their identical
controls.)

I think my biggest disappointment has been the slight tendency for it
leaving a kind of ghost image occasionally, which I guess is to do
with recording in one of the lower qualities. XP is useless unless
you're taping a one hour program so it will always be one of the other
three.

Is the panasonic -r aswell as ram?

I'd be interested to hear from users of -r -rw on quality and any
advice on the best discs to use (excluding the priceless taiyo nyuden
or whatever they're called!)

Originally I bought a cheap Alba and it was not working properly. So I took
it back and got a more expensive one. I just don't think they are very good
for recording something quickly at the last minute. Insert disc, wait 20
seconds or so for it to come off standby only to find that the disc doesn't
have enough space or whatever, erasing contents takes a short while.
Whereas with tape I can just record over whatever is on the tape and not
have to waste time deleting it.
Its just little niggles that annoy me. Maybe if I had spent £1000 on it, it
might have been the best thing ever but there with still be limitations with
DVD recording over VCR. Tape may be old hat now, but at least I can take a
tape out of the machine and put it back another day and it would pick up
where I left off watching a programme. There might be chapters but that
relies on a person remembering to note which chapter they left a programme
on when they last viewed it.
