Teletext on C4

I haven't seen any other posts about this so it might be a software
issue on my STB rather than a general fault. When I bring up teletext
on C4 on terrestrial digital, the menu comes up with the picture reduced
to about a quarter size as normal. If I then select an item from the
menu, say news, and go to an actual news item, the picture blacks out.
Nothing brings the picture back, not even exiting teletext completely,
until I change channel. Anyone else noticed this or is it unique to the
Humax software?

I get a message on C4 and the ITV channels telling me that the text service
cannot work at all on my ITV D box!

Seems to be OK here (where 'here' in receiving from Bristol Ilchester
Crescent on either a Topfield 5800 PVR or a Goodmans GDB3 STB). Yes,
quarter-size picture, yes *brief* black-out when selecting a news
story, but no problem otherwise. One peculiarity, though: after
pressing green to 'go back to tv', a small overlay comes up in the top
right-hand corner of the screen saying 'press green for text' and this
doesn't go away. Exiting from teletext by pressing 'text' doesn't
cause the overlay to appear.

It seems probable that Channel 4 have made some changes to their MHEG
which has broken your Humax, just as the BBC made changes to their
MHEG recently which broke the Topfields. Only a couple of quick
bug-fix firmware revisions have kept the Toppys 'on the air'.

But I guess you really need a report from another Humax owner.

I saw something similar on a dodgy Pioneer. The box found some
extra channels from a neighbouring transmitter during good
weather and made them the default BBC1/2 - but only within BBCi
some of the time! When reception deteriorated a little, the
picture vanished at some points within BBCi if you'd entered
from BBC1 or 2 and wouldn't return, even on exit, unless
you change channel away and back. A swift kicking around the
garden^W^W^W^Wall-channel rescan cured it.

Are you near two DVB-T transmitters?

I checked my Humax and get the same thing, although only on
the News stories - Sport was OK. I didn't try any others.
Going to a full-page story - which removes the TV frame -
then back to a menu, restores the picture without exiting.

The picture stays in News stories on my Thomson STB, though
it takes about 30 seconds for the initial menu to load, so
it must be down to the Humax.

Thanks Andre - if other boxes are working fine then it suggests that my
complaints are better directed to Humax than at C4 - although it is
possible that C4 are sending some non-standard MHEG, it shouldn't stop
the box showing a picture.

Yes, but they both have different channel numbers and the associated
interactive channels match. When going into Teletext, the display is
fine until the bottom level of any menu is reached - ie. the actual
story itself. While simply browsing MHEG indexes everything appears
normal, which I suspect would not be the case if it were picking up the
interactive channel from a different transmitter than the main one.

Thanks Jim, from other responses I was coming to the same conclusion
(its a problem with the box) but this confirms it. Oh well, an email to
Humax tech support might solicit a software update sometime in the next
millennium if their previous track record is anything to go by. :-(
