Today's The Big Day...
Well,
I'll be awaiting delivery of my Sony 51" KP-51WS520...I'm so jacked. Got a good price on a set that was ranked #1 on Consumer Reports for 1260$...my Mom has a Samsung 42" RP HDTV...and the picture is good on that...plus it was a store model...I can only imagine how great the Sony is going to be. Not only will TV be a new experience...but God of War on PS2 in widescreen is going to be unfathomable. I pity my neighbors... But, anybody else that got a newer Rear Projection set....how long did you wait before playing video games...I've read a couple places that you should "break in" the TV for a day before messing with games...is this true? |

No it's not true. But - you need to make sure the contrast and brightness are set properly. Many rear projection TVs are shipped with factory default settings that are high enough (commonly called "torch mode") to cause static images, such as status bars or information boxes in video games to burn in spots on the screen, especially if they are on for hours at a time. The contrast and brightness should be set using a calibration disk like DVD Digital Essentials or Avia if possible. If not, they should be set to at least halfway below maximum. |

Indeed, the first thing I do after turning on a new set, literally in the first minute, is set the picture mode to Pro, and then set the following: Contrast to 40%-50% Brightness to 50%-60% Sharpness to 5%-10% Scan velocity modulation to Off Color axis to Monitor (this eliminates the red push often found on US TVs.) Then, knowing the TV is safe, I fine tune the contrast, brightness, color level, and hue with a calibration DVD. |
I bought a Sony 51' 2.5 years ago, model Number :kp-51ws500. I thought
this was going to be a great set. Well, after 2 months, the screen started to flicker. Sure enough, Sony recieved enough calls to issue a service bulletin. Well, after the 2 procedures the repair man had to make BEFORE they replaced the CRT's took about a month. Sony had a procedure in place for them to follow before they replaced the CRT's. They ordered the new CRT's, and installed them. The TV since then has been fine, somewhat, but now, when the picture get's dark, I see white arches on the screen, in all inputs (HDTV, DVD,etc..) The TV is out of warrenty, and I am looking at another, and put this one in my bedroom until it finally dies. I will never, ever, ever, but another Sony TV again. Check the groups with my model number, you will see Sony built a piece of crap. Sorry to list this, and I am sure your TV will be fine, just, get the warrenty they add if you can/if they offer it. - Mark |
That's messed up...
My delivery was delayed a day...so I didn't get it yet. This set was rated #1 on Consumer Reports for RP sets...hopefully they've fixed this issue considering the set I bought is 2 models ahead of yours. I did a ton of research in many forums and newgroups and found very few problems at all with this set. I read of some problems with the 57" inch set series...I guess sometimes luck has something to do with it. "Mark A" wrote in message oups.com... ....I was a little disappointed in picture quality for typical cable at
first. It's amazing how much of a difference in picture quality there was with composite cables in comparison to coaxial (cable wire). With cable wire...I could see the grid of the set when it was stationary on one color, but even the composite wires solved that. The picture really looks good now...and after getting the set out of torch mode I can't wait to see what component video wires or even hdmi looks like. Also, the "TruSurround" effect on this TV is unbelievable...almost makes me not want to get a HTiB...I mean the music channels are really good for just TV speakers. "Krisma" wrote in message ... I read of some problems with the 57" inch set series...I guess sometimes luck has something to do with it. The CRT problems have been fixed for some time. The earliest sets with the problem had a resistor mod applied before they figured out that the problem was the CRTs. Sony has extended the warranty on the CRTs on the affected sets and has been very responsive in fixing the sets. It sounds like the other poster's set was not aligned properly after the CRT service and he may be seeing some retrace lines. It is very important to get to know the people who will be doing the service on anything that you buy BEFORE you make a purchase. The quality of service has more to do with the local provider than the manufacturer in many cases. Ultimately, of course, some products are better than others, and some companies are more responsive than others, but the person doing the work has a lot to do with how satisfied the customer will be. Your best bet is to find a dealer who handles his own service and is a factory ASC for the brand. He will have equity in customer satisfaction and will be more likely to intervene with a manufacturer on behalf of a customer. Sony is still one of the best companies in terms of service support. They are very beaurocratic and you have to do things their way, but among the choices out there, Sony, Mitsubishi, and Hitachi are the standouts. Leonard |
