New BBC News 24 DOG
BBC News 24's "red square" DOG seems to have disappeared at some point
today, to be replaced with a rather poorly done standard "white text in the top left corner" affair. Pics: http://homepage.mac.com/mwongozi/things/news24dog1.jpg http://homepage.mac.com/mwongozi/things/news24dog2.jpg Thoughts: - There's no clock anymore. - It's rather poorly done. The white text has a few black pixels around it, which shows up more clearly against a bright background, as on the second picture above. - The other on-screen graphics, like the captions and the "live" sticker, are still placed around where the red square DOG used to be - which leaves a rather odd hole. |

Now the next step is the put the dog to sleep. I know what channel I'm watch and I don't need a dog to tell me. Thoughts: - There's no clock anymore. All the better. There's already a clock on my EPG. - It's rather poorly done. Have they been shrunk down so you can actually see what's going on behind them ? |

As the News Special was also probably broadcast on BBC1, they probably turned it off so as not to annoy BBC1 viewers (obviously they don't give a toss about News24 viewers) |
" Thoughts: - There's no clock anymore. All the better. There's already a clock on my EPG. Would you believe there was a inbuilt software clock on my old Sony? Shame such a feature is missing on me new telly. Steve |

Probably removed for a BBC News Special. (BBC World can superimpose a BBC World logo over the top of the News 24 logo+clock, so it won't be for them, or they can add their own graphics over a mainly-graphics free feed) NB the BBC News 24 top left logo isn't that rare - they use it everynight over ABC World News Tonight at 0140ish - as they remove the red logo+clock to avoid clashing with ABC's graphics. (The show is also shown in full-height 4:3, not cropped and zoomed to 14:9 pillarbox for the same reason) Steve |

That's a pity, the little dog was a lot better than the "let's burn the logo on this screen" standard News24 obliteration. Early last week I was watching when first footage came in from New Orleans and the commentator said something along the lines of "as you can see from the red writing on the roof, this victim being rescued by helicopter was clearly diabetic and in need of urgent medical assistance"... except all you could see on the white roof was "BBC News24 Hurricane Katrina devastates New Orleans". Like most of the live footage they show on that channel, most of the useful parts of the images get vandalised by the BBC, reducing their value as "breaking news" - a message they never cease to obliterate their breaking news images with! -- Kennedy Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed; A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's ****ed.
