Satellite Freeview Why no ITV

Bought a cheap sat system from Lidl it has no decoder facility.
Works very well once convinced that Im not in Germany, had to switch to
Astra 2D from Astra 1B.
Instructions are not good!.
The unsuspected limitation is that I find all ITV channels even those
thought to be freeview are encoded.
Why?
I noted that most German channels on 2d are not encoded other than the
heavy accent.

ps I dont read emails on the demon address.

I think it's to stop anyone outside the UK watching ITV.
Someone who knows more will probably be along soon.
The situation *may* change eventually.

Welcome to Free-To-Air satellite TV. If you had it pointed at 19e
instead of 28e, you might have seen the Wales-England match on ZDF!

The Sky monopoly on satellite broadcasting! For advertising,
itv want itv-1 to be regionalised and most people to watch the
"right" region. To do this, they use the postcode registered
for the Sky viewing card and while they're at it, it's
encrypted too. I think I remember reading that Sky offered
them postcode+encryption for not much more than just postcode,
and maybe threatened to take away their prized EPG numbers if
they went FTA, or similar not-banned-but-not-nice "incentive".

There's not really a good "for copyright reasons" argument,
as itv-1 and -2 are all on Astra 2D's "UK" beam, the same as
BBC and itv-3, which are FTA. There's some overspill, but it's
tiny compared to other European public service broadcasters.

I hope that the office of fair trading or Ofcom will step in.
But no, the government has total Murdoch Vision. Non-Sky DSat
viewers aren't even counted as digital tv by Ofcom any more!

I noted that most German channels on 2d are not encoded other than the
heavy accent.

(2d or 2c?) The 19east German is easy. Try some of the Austrian
winter sports coverage for a challenge... :-/

I am sure it is on my set - but I have Freeview too so may be confused.

You'll get ITV3 and ITV News on your Lidl box, check out the following
link (http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html) for freq and to see what else
you can currently get - recommend you check this list monthly.

ITV1 and 2 are currently encrypted, but ITV are in talks with Sky to
try and get the same EPG+Viewing card deal BBC got which indicates that
they wish to go FTA. But it's in Sky's interest to get ITV to stay
with them as it gets people to take out a sky sub and make Sky money.
ITV4 launches in October and it's expected to launch FTA - recently
'Men and Motors' owned by ITV went FTA.

Also in todays Telegraph there is a report that ITV is in talks with
the BBC to join forces for a Freesat venture - hopefully they will use
the standard EPG format supported by all FTA boxes as well as Sky no so
open 'Open format'

The speculation is looking good, problem is these thing seem to drag
on.

I can't say for sure about ITV2 or 3 as my kids have monopolised the
digibox at the moment, but you can tell which is unencrypted with a $ky
box by taking out the card and seeing what you can watch.
Just because it's free on Freeview doesn't mean it's free on $ky,
unfortunately.
Regards Mike.
