I work in Customer Relations for a large company and I think your
parents are taking the ****. They wanted it at the price of a new
subscriber, they were told they could have it, then they said they
wanted it for free, Sky said they could have it for £50 and that's not
good enough.

Perhaps you can swap your parents for some that are more reasonable?

ROFL. ROFL. ROFL.

they offered a reconditioned one at £50 (is this guaranteed does anyone

Ignore the guarantee. UK law provides that all items sold should be
fit for the purpose and of merchantable quality. There are no time
limits on this though the length of time a thing can be expected to
work depends on its relative cost.

The other thing to remember is that the Sky+ contains just one moving
part that is likely to break down: the hard drive. A reconditioned
Sky+ will probably contain a new drive and if ever it goes wrong you
can fit another yourself for little cost.

Personally I would cancel and re-subscribe as a new subscriber, thus
getting the £99 new box offer.

Hi all.. hope someone can help.

My parents were over at mine the other day and say my sky+ box.. they
were hooked, and want one too. I presume you all know where this is
going now....

Now they have been with sky since 1991. always on the full package of
sports and movies.

My mother called them last night to ask if they could get a skyplus box
too. "only if you give us £259" was the response.

But we have been with you for all this time, and you are giving them to
new customers for £99.... surely as a loyal customer I should have one
for that too.....?? she said..

they said no till she said she wanted to cancel her subscription..then
they magically could match it at £99.

No she said.. I want it free, as I have been such a good customer....
they offered a reconditioned one at £50 (is this guaranteed does anyone
know?)

anyway my mother said no, cancel it, and has now given a months notice....

My parents WILL call back to reinstate it in a week or two as my old man
cant live without his football.

BUT are they likely to get a sky+ box for free if they do cancel their
subscription?

thanks.

Charlie

If you take a look at the Sky+ Forum on Digitial Spy;
http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/...splay.php?f=35 this has been
discussed several times on what people have been offered and the "new" box
for £99 or a "recon" box for £50 seems to be the norm. No one has been
offered a free box.

Personally, I'm the same. I've been with Sky since 1991, always on the top
package, so I would automatically consider myself a loyal customer and would
expect something more than the usual 'as advertised price' .. but whilst I
know I'd have to jump through hoops and haggle a bit to get a reduction, I
wouldn't personally expect it for nothing. If I wanted it that badly I'd be
happy to pay £99 for it :)

That brings up a question. How long does someone have to wait after
cancelling Sky before they are treated as a new customer for offer purposes?

Forever. You have to use another name.

do they use normal ide hard disks?

Yes.

if so can you put them in a pc to
get the transport stream for the unencrypted channels? (bbc, etc).

No.

or
have lots of them to use like blank videos in the sky+ and just keep
swapping them round when they get full?

You could but I doubt that many would want the inconvenience.

i know the encrypted stuff
wouldn't work outside the sky+, but is there any time limit on how
long you can keep recordings? would they still play 10 years from now?

Surely not. Sky make changes to the software, encryption and viewing
cards from time to time and this often results in old recordings being
rendered useless.
