New to HD...need a recommendation.

As the title suggests I am sorta new to HD and have not kept up on the technology. I do not need the latest and greatest, nor can I afford it. I was looking around on eBay and found the RCA D52W20 model, currently at a pretty good price. I asked the seller his reserve and he said $600. Providing it is in good condition, is that a good buy? I know it is only 480p. Is that a huge jump from my old television? Will I see a dramatic jump with 720 or 1080?

Please note that I do realize that I will have to get a new HD box and subscription from DirecTV in order to get true HDTV...that is later down the line. I need the TV first.

Indeed. The last time I was in BestBuy, they had some off brand 30"
HDTV set available for just under $500. That's brand new and a unit
that can do 1080i. THAT'S HDTV. 8-)

If you've got the $$$, for just under $1000 you can move into a 26" LCD
HDTV screen. They have the advantage of being substantially lighter and
(of course) only a few inches thick so they don't take over your living
space.

Buying a used TV over the Internet is just asking for trouble. If there
is anything at all wrong with it, you're at the mercy of the seller to
make good on repairing it. Unless you're dealing with a large seller,
the odds of that happening are rather slim. Better to get something new
that's within your budget so you're covered if it breaks during transit
and you'll have whatever manufacturer warranty on the unit after that.

Cheers,

The RCA D52W20 is a 52-inch diagonal widescreen projection HDTV. It is
capable of 1080i OR 480p (not just 480p). Amazon sells it for around $1,350.

You can download the complete instruction manual from
http://tv.rca.com/en-US/ModelDetail....=BySizeLar ge

This could cost several hundred $$ to ship. Check out the usual suspects to
see what their price is.

That is NOT HD. If thats being advertised as HD then its a scam. Run,
don't walk, you won't see any difference over your old one.

May be moot. He should at least look at one in a store.

Another reason for not buying it on ebay is that this set costs $1099 (NOT
$1700) at Circuit City. Save on shipping. Plus, no trucking co is going to
insure an ebay TV, because they have no way of knowing if it worked when it
went on the truck. Also, and I am not into projection TV, but it may need an
optical alignment job and reconvergence once it arrives.

As an aside, I noticed one of the NY camera stores is charging $230 shipping
on the larger LCD TVs, and these are 1/2 the size of a projection set.

That is the same TV I have loaned from a friend. I found it has 480p or
1080i only. It does not do 720p. I tried to send a 720p signal to it from
my DCT 6412 tuner. But it bands into 3 sections. It was actually quite
crisp however :)

Does this mean I do not have an HDTV if I can run a 1080i picture on it? I
know 480 is not HD, but what about 1080i? The HiDef channels look very
nice, but certainly as good as my friends Sony with 720p on it. I cannot
really complain as the tv is a free loan to me. But I really want it mostly
for Football. I am trying to figure out my cable box to see what format the
few HD channels are sending the signal on a given channel to my tv to
compare. I should hate to think I am paying for HD broadcasts that my tv
cannot do. I also use it as a HTPC, and have been concentrating on getting
the best picture out of that with mixed results. I really wish I could do
720p on this unit. Googling seems to lead me to believe most broadcasts in
HD are 720p. Am I right on any of this?

thanks,
SL

Your TV will convert the 720P signal to 1080i. You should be fine.

From what I've just researched, this TV is 1080I, not 480p. It IS a

High Def Model.

Here's the spec sheet from RCA
http://tv.rca.com/NR/rdonlyres/A2ED8...222Chassis.pdf

and the manual
http://tv.rca.com/NR/rdonlyres/F7870...0/D52W20IB.pdf

Definitely 1080i.

Looks like a decent price. New ones are about $1300.
