Sky+doesn't work at all

Hello

I had Sky+ installed on Friday using 2 Sky+ boxes, one I bought myself &
the other was part of the £99 + £10 muliti room upgrade offer.

Sky works on both boxes however I cannot record, live pause, nor instant
rewind. If I try to access my personal planner the system freezes. In
fact anything other than changing channels causes the system to freeze,
when only a reboot will work. More than once trying to change channels
caused the system to freeze. Sometimes after a reboot the set does not
respond to the remote control & needs to be rebooted again. I have
rebooted over 30 times today.

I cannot believe that both boxes or both remotes are faulty so can
any-one suggest what could be the problem, please.

I am getting signals from all inputs although the signals do vary
considerably.

I assume you have phoned Sky to activate the Sky+ features on both boxes ?
If this has not been done the boxes simply act as standard digiboxes.

Thanks Mark. Yes both boxes were activated & on Friday everything
worked. I recorded a film & watched the recording The first I thought
something was amiss was when all recordings made on Saturday failed &
there were occasional "freezings". On one box this has got so bad that
anything I attempt, other than changing channels, causes the system to
lock up.

The other box isn't as tempremental, although I cannot record, playback
the one thing that I have recorded (saying that there is no satelite
signal?) or instant rewind.

An engineer is now due to call on Friday, it's all a bit disappointing

You probably have a dish/LNB problem. Try swapping the feeds over to
see what happens.

If not the drives and/or 2nd tuners are probably dead.

What are your 4 signal quality readings?

On Box 1 the signal readings a

Input 1 Strength 80%
Quality 70%
Input 2 Strength 50%
Quality 60/70%

Box 2

Input 1 Strength 60%
Quality 75%

Input 2 has no signal so that clears up the recording issue. I have
checked the feeds into the box and it's okay so it must be at the other
end. This accords with your suggestion that it might be a dish/LNB problem.

Excuse naive question but what do you mean by swapping feeds over please?

Jomtien means disconnect the Co-ax from I/P 1 and connect it to I/P 2
and visa versa, on each box,
then do the strength / quality tests again

No signal on input 2 of a Sky+ box is usually an indication of hard disk
failure.

Well it was installed by the enginer sent by Sky, which might not be the
same thing. Because of where the dish is fitted it needed a "special
heights" person & Sky sent an independant rather than one employed by
them who asked me to pay him £20in cash. He was expecting to move my
existing digibox & the £20 was to cover his extra cable costs. The job
sheet he left me referred to both boxes.

Either the drive is dead (likely) or tuner two is dead.

Sky called today. The box they initially supplied was faulty and has
been replaced and the box I bought myself only needed resetting (phew) &
now works.

Thanks for all your input.
