DAB sounds worse than FM July 16th 05 12:47 PM

So you don't agree with the DAB advert on commercial radio that suggests
that analogue radios are worth less than an out of date half-eaten jar
of pickles then? ;-) It beggars belief what the liars in the DAB
industry will come out with in order to deceive the general public...

Simply put, DAB does sound significantly worse than FM, so if you're
happy with the stations that you listen to at the moment then
there's no point in getting DAB. Also, the audio quality of the
radio stations on the digital TV platforms are also higher than they
are on DAB because the bit rates they use are higher, and it's the
bit rate that is the main determinant of audio quality. So, as
you're on a digital TV newsgroup I assume you've got digital TV of
one variety or another, so you'd be better off connecting the output
of a digital TV set-top box to your hi-fi system, because that'll
sound better than DAB. To see what's available on the digital TV
platforms see he

Digital satellite is the best digital TV platform both in terms of
audio quality and choice of stations.

I do listen to radio via Freeview and Sky as the FM reception is poor
here since my big FM aerial fell off the roof. Its not very convenient
though in the bathroom, although there are spare cables under the bath
that I could wire a speaker to; which could also be used as a tannoy
for bathroom hoggers :-)

To be perfectly honest, I don't think the audio quality on small
portable radios is important, so if your FM reception is poor in the
bathroom then you might as well buy yourself a DAB portable. My
objection to DAB is that the audio quality isn't good enough for
listening on a hi-fi or on a car stereo.

Best way is not to believe any adverts for anything. You'll be telling me
next Calgon does really save money...

small portable dab radios may not work indoors

"If you live in a weak digital radio reception area, a DAB aerial can often
improve the digital signal quality that your radio receives. External
aerials work best when they are mounted somewhere high-up, preferably in the
loft or on the outside of a house or flat."

I cant plug an external aerial in mine
so mine will just stay in the draw as an expensive mistake

My main so called obsolite FM radio is built into a 6 months old Midi
system, my other FM radio is a clock radio I use in bed and the other
one I got is in the kitchen.
All three of them are better than any DAB system

Anyway, Africa gets enough from us as it is.

Having had a look at both recordings using Nero Wave Editor the only
difference that I can hear (and see) between them is that the FM recording
has a better treble response than the DAB recording. The DAB recording has a
better base response, but frequencies above 14Khz are definitely being
attenuated. I did my own simultaneous recordings of Radio 1 this afternoon
and got the same result.

At the end of the day it all boils down to personal taste. Personally, I
prefer the more "bassy" sound of DAB radio but I can certainly see (and
hear) what it is your on about Steve. But unless you were an audiophile, or
you had actually taken the time to compare the sound quality of both
systems, I don't think most people would either appreciate or notice the
difference.

It depends what station you listen to, radio 2 on DAB is crap, Fm is
much better and also radio four on FM is better than DAB.

I don't see the point in donating my obsolete radio to Africa. It's
quite unlikely it would reach there with all the valves unsmashed.

Your FM clock radio is better than any DAB system? Somehow, I find that
hard to believe.
