Freeview/FreeSat/HD
 

In another post it is annouced the BBC will be starting HD via satellite and
hopefully a FreeSat.

Does anyone know if this HD will also be on Freeview at the same time?
Or are all these people who are currently buying Freeview going to get a
shock?
Will ITV/Channel Four/Five etc be on this FreeSat? Either normal or HD.

Personally haveing gone digital now I will not be rushing into anything
more/different untill well after analogue switch off, if/when that happens.

I don't know whether HD is eventually planned for Freeview but yes, I think
a lot of people who bought into Freeview could be in for a shock when the
emphasis switches to the superior HD technology. Freeview is a kludge and
I certainly won't be looking to upgrade from my current Pace DTR730 to
another Freeview box, unless HDTV becomes available via that route. If
HDTV is ultimately satellite only then that's where my money will be going.

People are buying cheap Freeview boxes because it's a cheap way to get a
few extra channels. There's no promise about being delivered HDTV, so
they won't get a shock.

I think Channel 4 would definitely, because they're already FTA. I think
ITV probably would, because it's beneficial for them in the long-term.
Not sure about five.

Whether or not it is ULTIMATELY satellite only it will be until at least
analogue is switched off in ~2012!

Until then there is not the bandwidth *AND* the BBC have said that they "would
not want to confuse the drive to Digital (ie. "Freeview" in it current form),
on DTT before then!

They may if they've shelled out for a new aerial and now discover that HDTV
is the new way forward.

However with basic Freeview receivers seen recently at a local market, piled
high and selling for £25 each, I hardly think it's exactly going to be too
much of a traumatising experience if people then discover that after
investing such a huge outlay of cash, that they will have then to invest in
satellite equipment (and most likely a new display device) if they wish view
HDTV in all its glory.

Well I willchange my statement.
The BBC will get a shock when the ordinary Joe Public who has got Freeview
doers not ruch and get HD.

Not talking about Sky. We are on about BBC Freesat.

OK then - none of ITV/C4/C5 are currently on "BBC Freesat" - and have given
no indications that they will be!

As Sky receivers dominate in peoples homes "BBC Freeesat" HDTV will be bound
to be 100% compatible with Sky HDTV boxes.
