Static in my skybox
I have a Pace digibox, I was fiddling round the back (ooer) because of a
sound problem, turned out to be the channel, but as I touched the rear of the box it made my fingers tingly. This continued even when I switched the power off at the socket. I guess this isn't normal, should I worry, what can I do? Any help appreciated, Rick |

Any help appreciated, Rick If your fingers came anywhere near any of the connectors you may have picked up a discharge. I found out the hard way just how bad it can be when I decided to move my old analogue box. I unplugged it, removed the cables, put it in it's new place, plugged it in (stupidly) before trying to reconnect the cables. From what i could tell I touched the bare wire in the center of the cable onto the outside sheath of the socket, bang! it wasn;t a big bang, but it was a lot of blue smoke and the thing was dead. I even get this if I'm trying to plug anything into my tv card on my PC. I hate moving the tower so i tend to feel around for the socket with my finger, and every damned time I get a shock Pavlov obviously didn't use a Paul when he did his experiments :O) -- Paul (And I'm, like, "yeah, whatever!") ------------------------------------------------------- Stop and Look http://www.geocities.com/dreamst8me/ |

A consequence of modern domestic electronic appliances not being earthed these days. They are instead certified as having a low leakage by the use of double insulation techniques Remember that your installation consists of several interconnected double insulated components; TV, DVD, VCR, Sky, masthead amp, distribution amp etc. so the tingle you feel won't necessarily originate from the Digibox. Incidentally the original; Amstrad Digibox (DRX100) did have an earthed chassis. |

I'm sure it could be quite dangerous to an inquisitive toddler crawling around on the floor and fiddling with a CATV decoder. The thing is, how are you supposed to, for example, change the cable if you've got cable TV/internet, without getting "stung"? Ring the cable company and get them to turn off the signal for 10 minutes? Wear insulating gloves? [shrugs] Anton |

Feels like it's gonna blow my arm off sometimes. :p These days, if I have to touch it, I wear disposable surgical gloves. :D |
