Multi - recording and simulanious recording ?

Hi all,

Can someone please give me some basic DVR information?

Can a DVR allow me to record a show while watching a different channel?
What about recording 2 differnet channels at the same time while
watching a 3rd channel. Am I asking alot?

If I sigh up with either Dish Network or Direct TV, do they offer a dvr
that will allow such activity (at least record one/watch one)? If so,
is it only specific models?

Thanks for any comments.
Cheers,
Eric

None of them offer the ability to tune 3 channels at the same time. Record
2 and watch a 3rd/pre-recorded show is doable on the integrated
Satellite/DVR combos.

With DirecTV, any of the DVR models. With DiSH, the 522, 721 and 9xx
series.

Yes, but by simply getting two Tivos (or the dish equivalent) you can
record 4 different channels at the same time. With DVRs as low as they
are now, two Tivos (instead of simple receivers) is a reasonable
approach.

Yes, but that isn't really what was asked. I'm sure he (the O.P.) could do
the math to see that it's scaleable like that.

And it still doesn't make it a DVR capable of tuning 3 channels.

Me, I've got 6 tuners myself.

with the 522 and dish we can record 2 shows and watch one prerecorded
on two seperate tv's as two different feeds, not same ... an also
record two new and watch two prerecords at the same time.

Yes, if it is a dual tuner DVR. Third channel,I think tht the new Dish
HD-HVR might record from two satellite and OTA antenna at once.

DirecTV DVRs are by default dual tuner (their HD DVR, although having 4
tuners, 2 each of satellite and OTA, can only use and combination of 2
at a time)

Dish has single and dual tuner models, plus whatever their new HD DVR
is.

Thanks for any comments.

Eric

I have two and I sometimes record the same thing on both so I can watch from
wherever I want. I have certain shows
I like to watch while I excersize and others where I am more flexible. It
is nice to have the option. Of course, I guess it
might be possible to pipe each DVR to the other TV, but this is easier.

I also like being able to record two shows while I watch a third I already
recorded. It took a week to get a queue, but
now the problem is finding enough time to watch everything.

I have one and it works the same as the SD Tivo. It will record or play off
the antenna, but it is still limited to recording
two channels at once. They can be OTA or off the dish in any combination,
but only two at a time.

The big problem I have run into is that one channel is about 80 degrees off
from all the others and I can't get it without
moving my antenna, but that screws up trying to program the DVR to record
OTA. My solution for now is to ignore
that channel and just use the SD signal off the dish.
