AIUI : the only devices that will give a proper HD output are the HDTV STBs : in the USA and Australia (which wouldn't have anything to pick up), : HD-DVD players (which haven't hit the market yet) or PCs with a DVI : output. How about an HDTV Set Top Box for the Euro1080 service? That most certainly *would* have something to pick up! Richard. http://www.rtrussell.co.uk/ To reply by email change 'news' to my forename. |

I would have thought the biggest factor is whether the BBC and ITV start HD transmissions. Terrestrial transmissions are probably only possible after analogue switch off and then only if the government forgoes flogging of the bandwidth. If the BBC started satellite transmissions people might need two STBs - one for HD and one for regular ITV and channels 4 & 5, though whatever box SKY produce for their own HD service might be the answer. Why are you incapable of writing the word 'does'? You ALWAYS write 'do' when you should write 'does': I find it more annoying that he ALWAYS writes 'got' instead of 'have' or 'has': I do not see why you've got to do this sort of pedantry . Well I hope not HDTV uses about 5 times the bandwidth which means
we would be back to 5 or 6 channels on our terrestrial digital TV :O( I cannot see it appearing on terrestrial. Satellite broadcasting is going to lead the way. -- MESSAGE ENDS. John Porcella |

HDTV with H264 only needs about twice the bandwidth of SD with MPEG2. Many channels (such as home shopping) don't need to be HD and don't have any regional variations so they can be tucked away on a SFN taking up hardly any room at all. I see no reason (from a spectrum planning point of view) why the mainstream channels couldn't go HD on terrestrial after analogue switchoff. |

Satellite broadcasting is going to lead the way. Cable companies can also do this quite easily. Since both of the major UK cable companies are launching narrowcast Video on demand services, this would be quite an easy way to deliver some server-based HD content. Telewest's PVR box (launched later this year) will be HD compatible. It might be while before they can deliver broadcast HD though. |

In the US most cable companies utilize from 54MHz (our VHF 2) up to around 500MHz for analogue and 500MHz to 800MHz for digital channels (where s/n is a problem for analogue). That's a lot of space for HD content to mingle with SD digital. Besides, don't we all use QAM? On that we can agree. ;-) Now if we can iron out the whole 50hz vs. 60hz thing. :-( |

demo would be straight HD video on a good quality HD Plasma or LCD? Would not trust Comet, Currys, Dixons or the like for a demo. The chances of me being anywhere near Bradford in the next 30 years is remote. |
