noisy toshiba remote

I received my toshiba 62hmx84 last week, very happy with it, except when the
remote is illuminated it gives off a kinda whining noise, goes away when the
illumination is turned off, is this a defective remote or just the way they
are, its not really that bad, I haven't contacted my dealer yet.

Common with these remotes. To produce the light there is a dc to dc circuit
within the thing that is running, which produces the whine. Would have to
opt either for another brand of set or remote to not have this additional
feature.

have you tried the logitech harmony remotes, are they OK?, would the 659 be
OK for dvd/satellite/receiver?

Thanks

I have a Harmony 659... awesome remote

I had to program it a few times to get it just right for me, but it's been
awesome...

battery life is a bit worse than a normal remote... sucked up 4 energizer
AAA in a little over 3 months...
always wondered why they couldn't do a remote like a cordless phone...
cradle to stick it in for a recharge, which could also give it a locator
function...

The soon-to-be-released Harmony 880 will come with a recharging station:

The "program" is actually stored on Logitech / Harmony's web site and is
portable between different models of remotes. You connect the remote to
your PC via USB and connect to the website to modify / download programming.

I have a Toshiba 62HM94 and I don't hear any noise from the remote.

thanks all, I'll talk to Toshiba, the remote does everything for me and I
like the auto backlight feature, other than the select key doesn't work with
my bev 6000 receiver, thats another question for them

Its actually probably a DC-AC circuit to run an electroluminescent
backlight. The inverter circuits usually take in DC from the batteries and
output ~120V at 400hz. EL backlights look cooler than a cheaper and quieter
LED backlight, but I just don't think its worth it. The expense, the noise,
the battery life. Having said that, I have chosen EL backlights for
projects of mine because they DO look cool.
