Ignore it - just another scam to push up a website's ratings of the search
engines, and sign you up for spam.

I think not, read into it a little more and your find this is fact.

It's very similar to all the 'free iPod' claims.

Arthur please do a little research on the subject and maybe you will find
this isn't so far fetched as you deem it to be.

As stated, this is a frequent device by many web sites to boost their
traffic, which pushes up their ratings on search sites like Google. The
more hits they have, the nearer to top of the search list. The most usual
'prize' is an iPod, but this one has just the same presentation.

As a secondary benefit of their offer, they harvest a list of valid email
addresses. If you have sent them yours, I hope you have a good spam
filter.

I'm not familiar with the particular Toshiba product, but according to
this site:
http://www.i4u.com/article2231.html
it only works in Japan!

The number of hits a site gets bears no relation to it's ranking in a
search engine.

It's too late, and I'm too tired, to go into details but I can assure you
that this is how Google sets the rankings.

I think we should have a Freeview one which uses a Camcorder battery pack to
supply the power required for the DTT decoder. It could be quite cheap, as
it combines 3 devices that are already cheap and widely available, a
Portable DVD Player without the DVD drive, a low-end Freeview decoder in
it's place, and a standard Camcorder battery for the best combination of
power and economy. They would work all over London where Freeview signals
are strong enough for reliable reception (I know because I use one here) and
their popularity could take off years before we get decent TV services on
Mobile phone networks or DVB-H. Not having to pay a costly subscription to a
video-mobile phone company would more than offset the initial cost of a
Freeview Portable, and help to make sales take off in the same way that
Freeview set top boxes have proved much more popular than On Digital. Of
course why they don't already put Freeview tuners inside budget 14 inch CRT
TV's I don't know, since they already put DVD players or VCR's in the bottom
of them, and a Freeview version would be just as popular.

No it is not, how would google know how many hits a site has had?

David, you are quite right. I've just re-read the article about this and
my memory was faulty. What Google checks out is the number of references
to the site's URL on the net - other sites, newsgroups etc. This is how
they judge the "popularity" of the site, and is why various dodges are
used to get multiple references to a URL passed around. Apparently there
are people making a good living just boosting sites up the list for their
owners.

Exactly how does an external search engine know how many hits any
given website has had? Short of parsing a copy of every website's log
file, there's no way they could tell hit counts. You are confusing
this with Google's ranking by pages that link to said website.

Explain how that works please.
Number of hits is entirely unrelated to where an SE places a site.
Consider this question: how do Google et al know how many hits a site is
receiving?
Hint: they don't - how can they?
