Future of DirecTivo or DirecTV + Tivo ?

I got a breathless email from DirecTV touting their DVR coming out
"sometime in mid-2005".

So what's the future for DirecTV subscribers with current Tivo's?

Sure, we can hold out with our current units until HD really does become
ubiquitous or until the features of the DVR's and nextgen Tivo's become
so alluring that we must switch.

In the meantime, I'd settle for a little more speed in the interface
(I'm still using Sony series ones hacked to hold dual 120 gig drives).

Nothing changes. DirecTiVos will continue to function as normal.

Until they change the video compression method to mpeg4.

I've been with DISH, and then DirecTv for 8 years now. They've been
threatening to switch to MPEG4 since day 1. I'm not going to hold my
breath expecting it to happen anytime soon.

DirecTV has said they have no plans to change their SD signals to
MPEG4 - it would obsolete *all* DTV receivers, and that's more expense
than they're willing to carry.

Right now MPEG4 plans are limited to new HDTV local spot beams. They
haven't even decided to switch existing spot beams, or the national HD
signals, at this time.
