Sound-less BBC3 & BBC4 via Freeview
 

I get my reception from the Sandy Heath transmitter, and have noticed a few
times that either one or both of the BBC3 & BBC4 pair are without sound.
Does any one know an email address at the Beeb which gets noticed on matters
like this? (I found the sound (with picture) on the CBBc and CBeebies
channels on the first night of silence, but not on the next.)
I tried phoning in and the gent said my call had been logged but it happened
again a night later.

I had no sound for the late repeat of "two pints of lager.." a couple of
days ago.
That was in the midlands so it seems to have been widespread

I've been using my Humax set-top box since about New Year - so very little
experience to draw on.
I first noticed the lack of sound a few days ago on a programme about "The
Blues" on either the 6th. or 7th. January at 10.00pm.
A few nights later whilst I was phoning the BBC, the sound returned but it's
happened again since then. Haven't noticed any problem on other channels.

It is possible that there were channel source problems, the Duty
Engineers Logs would show this and either the Capita phone in or
Reception Advice would be able to read these and tell you.

Otherwise this has to be related to your set up, sorry!

BBC3 & BBC4 are on different multiplexes, though sourced as programmes
in the Broadcast Centre in London.

If it were a source fault not only would someone else in the UK notice
but both the London Continuity area and Nations (for BBC3*) would too.
*The Nations receive BBC3 as a wideband sustaining feed for their
Statmux of Mux 1.

Only BBC3/CBBC hits the English Regions for their Muxing (on Mux 1) and
it is impossible for their Transmuxes to drop the audio. Or any other
component.

I would suggest you search the newsgroups and Digital Spy to see if this
has occurred before.

I've had that once or twice on one or two programs but I know that the
Freeview box is ok because there's sound on other channels. I think it's
something in the multiplexing equipment that has fallen over.
It's something you have to live with because no-one can be bothered to
monitor the signals, their idea of quality control is that people ring
up and whinge.

We've noticed Magic (the radio channel) coming on in the morning (timer)
with no audio, recently. Slight drawback in the case of a freeview radio
channel, one would think (although in Magic's case I suppose all you have
to do is hum one of their 20 tunes to yourself and then imagine a ten
minute block of trite adverts every now and then, and you're back on
track).

Sounds similar to mine. See the "Freezeview" thread from a couple of weeks
back.

Thanks for that tip - I've found it in the archives, and I guess I'm doing
quite well in that my signal strength is around the 30% mark with a few
variations up to 33%, and occasionally down to 20% with then a loss in
quality. Must try raising my external aerial a little.

Mike, you are SOOOOO wrong with that assumption.
The DTT network is the closest monitored system in existance.
I have seen the muliplexing centre at TC and they have huge plasma
screens with a mosaic of all the channels displayed simultaneously. On
each sub-picture is a stereo bargraph showing sound level.

There are also MPEG quality monitors on the Mux outputs to detect
effects which would be noticeable on the picture. (lookup Rohde &
Schwarz DVQ)

In addition to the normal monitoring (using Rohde & Schwarz DVMD's) the
output of all MuxC and D TX's are monitored for the correct PID's being
present 24/7.

Obviously, things go wrong from time to time but the broadcasters could
not be doing any more !
