ITV4?

http://www.kingofsat.net/en/ reports that a test card labelled ITV4
started earlier this week. Anyone know more about this?

Rumours on http://www.theairwaves.net/ and http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/
seem divided whether it's a new channel aimed at women or a rebrand for
Men and Motors.

The strongest rumour has been for a women's channel, but there is also
the question of what is happening to Men and Motors.

According to Wotsat.com it is likely to be a channel aimed at women,
but the only official quote they have is, Jonathan Lewis, ITV's
director of digital channels, said: "We are spending a lot of time
looking at new channels and we may launch a new channel sometime next
year. It could be called ITV4 because that would make sense."

My guess is that at the moment ITV are looking at lauching extra
channels to strengthen the ITV brand, and maintain viewers in a digtal
age.

PS
Interestingly Wotsat also noted in October that ITV was planning to
sell its stake in Granada Sky Broadcasting, when actually something
rather different happened.

However Granda Plus is no longer a concern for ITV, and it strengthens
my feeling that Men and Motors will either be ditched, run as a
totally seperate business or be rebranded as ITV. There are now four
ITV channels (including ITV News) my guess is that eventually there
will be probably be seven or eight.

It'd be amusing to hear the outcry feminist itv4 watchers cause when they
realise that after 10pm ITV4 turns into 'lucy's sex lessons', yippee.

It'll be a pay-tv station i presume? Or will they encrypt it at night only?

Also, will it be on freeview? We have enough american pish on our freeview
boxes without itv churning out more guff

Its a pity that Teletext haven't sussed that nobody watches text just
for the helluvit.

On analogue, Teletext is carried on the ITV channels, but they have a
separate channel for Teletext on digital terrestrial. As a consequence,
all ITV and Teletext channels are much less useful on digital than they
are on analogue, and a long way behind the BBC channels which offer
fully integrated services including a rudimentary interactive system.

Add to that the lousy system ITV encode in, which is much less immune to
break-up than the BBC and others. Until ITV grasp the digital medium
with both hands they will continue to demonstrate to their customers and
clients alike that they are the third rate broadcaster that they always
have been.

I guess they could get it on Freeview if they can persuade Channel 4 to use
the same type of more advanced statistical multiplexer which ITV now use,
and hire some space from them. Channel 4's half of Multiplex 2 would then
hold 4 channels instead of the present 3, and it would be full of things
that end with a 4:
Channel 4
E4
Free Four
ITV 4
