TUTV - an ulterior motive ???
Just thinking aloud here.
Nobody questions the success of the Freeview offering. TUTV seems highly unpopular. I don't know anybody who has it or is even considering getting it. Could TUTV be merely hogging the increasingly precious bandwidth in the hope of being bought out, knowing full well TUTV as it stands is a no-hoper ? Could that have been TUTV's plan from the start ? $ky clearly hates the success of Freeview - even though they are a partner as it is definately holding back new $ky satellite subscriptions. Don't you think $ky would love to take over TUTV and offer nothing but $ky Sports 1,2,3 + $ky 1 or $ky Movies 1 ? That would leave the existing channels as a sort of Free Family Pack. Would that ever be allowed ? I believe TUTV's bandwidth provider is SDN. What the heck has S4C ever done to deserve this bandwidth ? Who is the "D" part in SDN ? Does anyone know for how long TUTV have contracted with SDN to rent the bandwidth ? I wonder if they are good payers and how deep their backers' pockets are. Your thoughts. |

As you are discussung ulterior motives you have to factor in that the BBC helped start Freeview largely so that there would be no danger of ALL viewers having a STB with decryption ability - as was the case with Sky and ITV/ON Digital - leading to calls for a "subscription BBC and no TV licence". This has been freely admitted by Greg Dyke! Also consider that, before TUTV, channels were just *NOT* being taken up on Freeview (leading to the relatively large number of shopping ones). The very high transmission costs (relative to satellite) were putting most broadcasters off! |
S4C = Sianel Pedwar Cymru - 'Channel Four Wales' SDN = S4C Digital Networks. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought SDN stood for: S = S4C D = something else - hence my question N = NTL If you are correct, why on earth would S4C be given an entire 8MHz RF channel ? What is their contribution ? fred |

What is their contribution ? fred All the national broadcasters were guaranteed bandwidth on DTT. S4C (SDN) weren't given an entire channel - they co-share it with Five, but Five has opted to lease its' spare bandwidth to SDN rather than launch any new channels of their own. It might seem like a cop-out on behalf of Five, but when you look at how ITV has wasted their allocation (ITV2 and the upcoming ITV3 - repeats, repeats and 'extra' shows), perhaps Five had more sense than to launch a collection of crap channels just to fill its portfolio.
