Humax F2 Fox T
Hi - just got one of these to 'interface' properly with my Panasonic DVD/HD
recorder - which it does, marvellous. Anywho, just a couple of Qs: What's the latest software? Mine is Dec 2003 and there doesn't seem to be any reference to an update on their site. The EPG has a lot of gaps. It's been on about an hour and there's nothing on a couple of channels (ITV) beyond now, and the most distant programme is 5th October. The signal is quite low (about 48%), but quality is quite high (about 95%). Any ideas or experience of this? Many thanks Rob |

Many thanks Rob This seems to be the latest software, but there were rumours of an update coming possibly later this month. This seems to be intended to sort out the epg problems you descibe, which I also have. The software update should happen automatically (unless you have been in the settings and disabled it) so you won't know it's happened unless you check the technical information periodically. |

Thanks Roger. I did a quick google before I bought it and could only find one reference to this, so I assumed it was a one off. I don't think it should be advertised as having a 7 day EPG if it doesn't - the sole reason I bought it. I've written to Humax and I'll report to group when I get a reply. Rob |

They say it doesn't work properly and never has. A software update is proposed in the next few months, but no date is available. I suggested that they shouldn't sell it on the basis of having a 7 day EPG, and they agreed and said they'd take my comments on board. Rob |

Rob Legally speaking I should think you would have a case for returning the box to the retailer, depending on how long you've been using it. However I still think it's the best Freeview box (I'm not counting the hard disk ones, that't a different discussion) so it depends on a) how much you care about the EPG and b) whether any of the others are any better at the moment, a question I can't answer. |

I could take it back - bought it from Sainsbury's (mischeavously) with that in mind, but, as you say: However I still think it's the best Freeview box (I'm not counting the hard disk ones, that't a different discussion) so it depends on a) how much you care about the EPG and b) whether any of the others are any better at the moment, a question I can't answer. The EPG does sort of work, and I've used it with complete success with a Panasonic HD/DVDR - RGB scheduled recording - which is why I bought it. Rob |

EPG seems to work fine on my F2FoxT. However, are you sure that you are getting all of the muxes from the same transmitter? I am in the crossover region between Bluebell Hill and Crystal Palace, so can pick up the muxes from both. I have noticed that if I tune to a channel on a CP mux then all of the EPG data for all the channels from the BH transmitter will gradually be erased - not just overwritten - and vice versa. In addition, after changing from one transmitter to the other, I can open the program guide and watch the entries for the channels from the new transmitter fill up with data over a few minutes. It does take quite a while for all 7 days to appear - and only a couple of channels seem to fill the full space. Apart from that the only other problem has been very occasional software lockups - usually if I tune to a mux with a poor signal. These require the mains supply to the unit to be removed to initiate a cold boot. Only happened a couple of times in 7 or 8 months ownership though. I did have one interesting bug appear the other day, which I could only fix by deleting all the channels and reinstalling them from scratch. For some reason, every BBC channel was blanked - until I pressed the "i" key to display the programme info overlay, then the sound and vision came in as normal. Remove the info overlay and the picture and sound disappeared again. Biggest gripe I have isn't with the box, it is with poxy channels operators that falsely classify their programmes in the EPG. I don't care what definition you use, none of the travelogues on Sky Travel are "Movies" by any stretch of the imagination - and paging through 7 days of "A Home Abroad" to find the real movies is a real PITA. The shopping channels are just as bad in this respect, which is another reason to delete them all! -- Kennedy Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed; A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's ****ed.
