Border TV region first with digital switch
 

According to reports in local press (whether true or not is another
question) that the Border TV region are going to be the first to be
switched over fully to DTT in 2007.

It's a typical local news scare story. Because Border area transmitters
don't currently broadcast a digital signal, the claim is that when the
analogue shut-off happens, people will get no signal at all.

Even this gvt isn't daft enough to chop the analogue signal before the
digital service is up an all necessary transmitters, even if some people
will have reception problems.

And the MP making the fuss is a Conservative MP. What a surprise. Mix
technology that many people don't understand with political
point-scoring and you have a recipe for a disaster.

Sounds to me this MP is trying to frighten people..
The switch off was supposed to start 2010 but I thought from recent news it
was to be later not sooner.

Err, no! The UHF network only started in 1964.

Err, no! The UHF network only started in 1964.

And where does the original article restrict the scope of the "analogue TV
network" to being the later UHF era? I believe analogue TV started with MW!

Caldbeck (the main Border transmitter) is digital. I don't know what
people in the south lakes are complaining about - most of them can't get
Border anyway and have to tune into Granada instead. Personally
speaking, as far as I'm concerned DTT can't come soon enough to Keswick.

Which was in turn preceded by Baird's regular TV broadcasts, albeit 30 line
on MW, in 1929. The article does not constrain the analogue network to be
the "high-definition" network that started experimentally in 1936.

Dont forget the *other* main Border transmitter - Selkirk!
Bloody useless location - must be the only main transmitter on the
network which doesnt actually cover any of the main towns in the service
area - doesnt even cover Selkirk properly...
