So it doesn't matter whether HD-DVD or Blu-ray wins, we'll still be
stuck with microsoft! Given that Blu-ray has a higher capacity and is
already backed by a studio (Columbia Tristar - because its owned by
Sony) what chance now for HD-DVD?

Micro$oft isn't by any means the best in this area. I agree they're good but
they're only in the position they are because of being the richest company
and they like to be anti-competitive and spend a few cents in court to tell
the judge to shut up.

I vote for the Xvid with people who really know they're stuff and not some
company that just wants some cash at the end of the day.

Both specs now have H.264/AVC and WMV9 as standard, so it doesn't
necessarily mean discs will use WMV9.
