How bad is Nebula DigiTV crashing problem ?

I've got a DigiTV card on the way to me.

I was hoping to put his in my Win2003 Server as thats the one PC in the
house that stays on 24/7 and would therefor be alwas available for
recordings etc.

Having seen talk in here of the software crashing, I'm now a little
concerened.

Does a DigiTV crash take out the whole machine and need a reboot or simply a
restart of the DigiTV software ?

The server runs my E-mail/website/ftp/file shares etc so would be a pain to
have to restart it too often.

Views ?

The problem is that the Nebula v3.x software can crash if it is
decoding when a lot of bad data is received (e.g. a 10 second burst
of impulse interference). This only crashes the DigiTV application,
no reboot is needed.

Good :-)

It used to be more of a problem for me, but has only happened once
since the last round of DTT power increases; if you're getting a
decent signal it probably won't happen at all.

Signal isn't too much of a problem here - The first step if it were would be
to put an aerial on the roof. I'm close enought to Crystal Palace to get
away with a battery boosted set top aerial.

If you do find it's a problem, you can set the recording options so
that all timer recordings take place in "silent" mode - i.e. record
but don't decode. This ensures that you won't miss timer recordings
because of this bug.

OK - Shall investigate if/when I experience problems.

Nebula are aware of this problem and are looking into it; they're very
responsive to bug reports.

From what I've read thats backed up in most places - Seems strange that the
software isn't rock solid by now though. Perhaps they put too much
development effort into new features rather than tidying what they have
already ?

There is some truth in that, but some of those features are very useful.
The web interface is a case in point; being able to set your PVR from
anywhere you can get internet access is something I find myself using much
more that I would have thought.

Hi Fik,

Are you going to view the programs on a TV ? I'd be interested in knowing
how you plan to watch the programs. I'm thinking of building a PVR but am
tempted to build something low powered and silent if I can store all
recordings on my server.

TIA,

Yup - definately looking to playback via the TV.

Seem to be a million different ways to do this depending on which box you
have where.

Not sure on which method I'll be using yet - I'm sure I'll try various
options, including :-

Recording and playing back from dedicated box using dual monitor outputs.
Storing files on server, playing back via Xbox (XBMP)
Recording onto Server, play back using laptop TV Out (Nebula client)
Recording to server, burn to DVD, take DVD downstairs.

I record (DigiTV) on dedicated machine but transfer to (larger discs)
server then (mainly) watch via MediaMVP - cat 5 cable down the hall.
