Dave,

Your sig states that you can get a NG card to get the free channels
after cancelling the sub...

OK, my situation is: Jan 2003 cancelled Sky sub and continued getting
the free channels. Later in 2003 started losing ITV / C4 etc as I was
on the old Sky Card. At the same time the tuner in my digibox died so
we just ditched it and bought the Nokia MediaMaster freeview box down
from the bedroom... The dish is still on the wall outside...

So, can I ditch the Nokia, phone the number you give above, pay £23.50
to get a new card, get a 2nd hand digibox from somewhere and get all
my free channels back via Sky?

That would be bloody great! If so, can you (or anyone else) advise on
the best place to pick up a 2nd hand digibox and also which are the
better models to buy...

If it has any bearing on the digibox connecttions etc I have a Sony
widescreen TV with RGB scart in or I can wire it via s-video through
my Pioneer amp...

TIA

AFAIK Yes. I personally would keep the Nokia for a bedroom TV

The problem is that $ky free channels are not the same as Freeview.
Check the lists on http://www.bbc.co.uk/digital/channels.shtml to see if
they suit you. uk history and uk bright ideas are not there.

I have a $ky Family subscription, plus 2 freeview boxes, so can not check
my info. Just use the sig Pro Bono.

Sorry can't remember the web address that was given a week ago, it is the
one by the ITV, Ch4 and Five that tells about this 'free' card costing just
under £25. Any way this scheme it says as been extended for One month
through out January.
Now to me that indecates something different soon.
No more FTV cards?
Different price?

That's what I was planning to do, although the Nokia is so awful I may
just buy a new box :-)

Or, if you live near one of 6 select branches of Tesco, you can walk
in and buy a brand-new Sky digibox for GBP113.

See uk.tech.sky for details.

Had an hour to spare yesterday (for the first time in ages!) and dug
the old Grundig box out

It works! So I guess it must have been an overheating problem (it was
extremely hot when (i thought) it died). It was set between my VCR and
a shelf in my cabinet with only a few mm clearance above and the
cabinet has a door so I guess that was the problem!

Anyway, ordered me a NG card so I will be resurrecting the grundig
when it arrives, so new question: If I give the box enough clearance
this time, will it still be OK in the sealed cabinet?

I am going to put it in the bottom of the cabinet with about 6 inches
clearance to the shelf above. I really do need to keep the cabinet
closed as I don't want my 2 yr old putting things in it or possibly
snapping off the tray of my DVD player...

TIA

Any chance of poking some ventilation holes in the back panel of
the cabinet, preferrably at the bottom? Don't use small holes as
they don't work well at v low differentials.

| I am going to put it in the bottom of the cabinet with about 6 inches
| clearance to the shelf above. I really do need to keep the cabinet
| closed as I don't want my 2 yr old putting things in it or possibly
| snapping off the tray of my DVD player...

No idea :-(

Thanks for all your help with this prob Dave... Really looking forward
to getting the Sky EPG back as soon as the card comes. Can't f*#%ing
stand the damn Nokia box...

Will do, ordered it last thursday so it should be here some time
before Weds next week (28th) (they said up to 10 days on the phone).
As long as the wife isn't watching something I should have it all up
and running the evening the card arrives...

In the mean time, I can post the exact details of getting my box
resurrected on Thurs after nearly a year on a shelf gathering dust.

I plugged it all back in and it popped up on 998 with a "searching for
listings message" took a couple of minutes to channel scan and then I
could get the BBC channels but not some of the others. I checked Game
Network and FTV which I knew should be FTA, didn't bother checking any
higher at that point. They both reported "technical fault". So I
forced a software update and a few minutes later the box came on with
all FTA channels. "Woo hoo" I shouted. 10 minutes later, I had ordered
the Next Gen card.

Dave,

Got the box up and running again with the FTV card and none of the
channels would load so forced ANOTHER software update and all was OK!
Woohoo!

2 days later, not so Woohoo :-( Box overheats and dies again...
totally fried this time, 2 days of cooling off under the stairs
(coldest part of the house) and it cannot be saved..

So, I just bought a nice Sony 760 from eBay which turned up today and
I will be installing it tonight.

Just got to figure out something better for ventilation... thinking of
putting some quiet fans on the cabinet, one intake one exhaust, just
like my PC... Does anyone know of such an item, which will run off
normal 240v?
