Why would S-Video not work?
If you read my previous post you know about my connection problems.
The simple solution would be to run the DVD player through one of my four S-Video inputs on my TV which would leave the two component inputs free for my HD box and my XBox (which only allows for component video). Unfortunately when I hook the DVD player up to an S-Video port I don't get a picture and can't figure out why. The TV is on the correct input (I tried several) and the DVD is definitely playing because the audio is hooked to the receiver and I can hear it. The TV also displays S-Video as the video source, but the screen is black. Any ideas as to what might be wrong? Wojo |
Check the set-up for your dvd player. It may be set to bitstream which, I
believe, is only component out. Depending on your DVD player, it may have a different name. Just try changing it. The only thing is, if you have a progressive scan player, you have to use the component for progressive to work. Larry "Wojo" wrote in message ... Fire up the DVD player, and run the TV through all it's video inputs. Sometimes one of the rear inputs will be the same input that is used for a set of jacks on the front panel w/ a front/rear switch next to the front jacks. If the switch is set to "front", the rear jack won't work. 2) cable is defective 3) dvd player is defective or somehow only turns on the SVHS output when some option is set (RTFM) |

If so, turn it off an give it a whirl......or try a new cable. |

If so, turn it off an give it a whirl......or try a new cable. That sounds feasible! After writing these post I pretty much gave up for the day out of frustration, so I'll try that tomorrow. I know I made a number of changes to the settings to maximize the output using the component cables, so very possibly I made that adjustment too. I would think it would be automated to the output type, but I've read numerous negative reviews of this particular DVD (Kenwood DV-705) and that could be part, if not all, of the problem. Wojo |

There should be an option allowing you to enable/disable the player's component video output. |

Some progressive scan DVD players disable their S-Vid and composite outputs when their component out is switched to progressive scan (480P) mode. If there's a setting in the player menu or a switch to go to progressive scan, change the setting to interlaced and see if that enables the S-Vid out. As other posters noted, ideally you should pursue a component vid switch if you want to use component vid out from all your sources. Gary E -- |Gary A. For audio: Digital 5.1 is *way* better than left/right if you have a surround sound system. For video: s-video is slightly better, but probably not enough for you to notice. If the TV was more $800 or so, you might see the difference. use component video (three cables) if you have such an option. |
