Sky Magazine

The January 2005 Sky Magazine comes with a nice letter inviting you to "opt
in" to continue receiving a copy before 14th Jan 05 , stating that the
magazine is free. I seem to remember in times gone by it had a price on the
front cover but was included (forced on you) as part of your subscription.

What's the betting this is another way of hiking prices? i.e. you ask for a
magazine, now pay for it, despite the fact that you used to pay for it
anyway.....................

Personally, I wont miss it.........

Me neither. But given that IIRC the cover price was £2.50 then
you're dead right - it is in essence a price rise. I feel like
opting-in for the sake of it, but still binning it when it arrives.

How long before the dictionary definition of "Sky" is "insidious"?

Me neither, the letter is just about Sky Movies, etc.

I had a quick flick through it this evening and had to wonder why they
appear to mainly promote the dross rather than highlight the quality shows
that might otherwise get missed (yes there are some!) - anybody picking up a
copy that doesn't happen to be a subscriber would think that everything on
Sky (apart from the films) is dreadful.

I haven't got the January mag yet, but I think that having a cover price on
free magazines was some sort of VAT fiddle.

The magazine carried a price so that SKY could separate that "revenue"
and not pay any VAT on it since it was for a publication.
That tax loop hole was closed a few years ago.

Didn't the magazine have a cover price so they could avoid paying tax on
that part of your subscription? Maybe this isn't the case now. I must admit
I never read the thing but I'd rather they sent it out instead of giving
them the saving of not sending it out.

Interesting. My letter says nothing whatsoever about the Sky Magazine -
just the same stuff about the silly "Sky Kids" leaflet. They've been

Mine doesn't mention the "opt-in", neither does it mention the "sky kids"
either! The first three paragraphs are about Sky Movies and the last makes
mention of the TV Guide and Search & Scan to find out what time stuff
starts. I guess the letter is tailored depending on your package, and the
mag is of little use to non-movie subscribers so maybe it's those who are
being asked to opt-in?

I'm surprised they've sent it this month since my 30 days notice to cancel
is up on 2nd Jan. Maybe they'll want it back ;) I know they want 1 day of
next months subscription pro-rata as I cancelled too late.

Cheers,
Dave

Nope, I have movies and got asked if I wanted it.
