Since I'm an existing subscriber, do I need to connect it to the phone
line?

Both, or just the Sky+ box?

Both boxes must remain connected to the same telephone line (different
extension boxes ok - just same phone number) at all times - this is the
requirement of multi-room.

All boxes involved in a multi-room subscription need to be connected to the
same phone line. This is part of the multi-room deal - otherwise you could
sell on the card and box for the mirrored subscription to a friend or
neighbour...
