Sky faces threat to monopoly from ITV free satellite link with BBC

Previously I posted details of ITV in talks with the BBC with regard to
FreeSat, but was unable to link to on-line details, as the only details at the
time were in the printed media, well now these details are on-line:

ITV is considering joining the BBC in a new non-subscription venture which
will seek to break BSkyB's monopoly on satellite broadcasting and could lead
to the end of ITV's payments for having its services included on the Sky
platform.

The BBC is determined to press ahead with its own free satellite (FreeSat)
offering despite the fact that Sky launched such a product last week. Free
satellite gives consumers access to dozens of channels, such as CNN and the
BBC stations, which are broadcast free-to-air and unencrypted with just a dish
and a digital decoder box.

Good.
For someone like me who cannot receive DTT until they switch off analog, it
would be very useful to have someone provide an satellite alternative to
Sky.
Some healthy competition might drive down prices of equipment, and encourage
more channels to go free if they believe they can get wider coverage and
hence ad money.

I hope it comes to fruition, I'm fed up with Sky having an absolute
monopoly on satellite broadcasting in Britain.

But unless C4 & C5 job-up, as an option, it's worth squat. C5 renewed
its contract last year/this for 10 years, and C4 renewed recently too.

I for one would jump at the opportunity of having the standard analogue
channels (plus hopefully ITV2/ITV3, by implication if ITV does join) as
an alternative source to Freeview, but I really can't see how this will
be attractive enough to anyone if two fifths of the existing analogue
channels are missing on the platform. HMG certainly won't intervene
here, so I really can't see where this will lead. Ten of ten for effort
BBC, but no cigar (as I see it).

Particularly when it is C4 and C5 that have the poorest analog signal
quality (for me at least), and therefore is one of the key things that makes
digital satellite so attractive in the first place.

And isn't there scope for them to also provide some pay channels? It would
provide an alternative outlet for non Sky "subscription channels" on a
possibly more open platform.
