What if the boxes are rotated weekly, and only the one at my house is

AFAIK the test is run on an irregular basis but relies on both boxes
ringing home from the same line at more or less the same time. So the
answer is probably no.

In theory (due to lack of need and bother) would it not be possible to do
sky multiroom to a nearby house via very long phone & sky cables?

Yes. Only the phone cable is needed. The rest of the equipment would
be quite independent. Proper provision should be made to prevent
electrical problems.

A DECT socket might do instead.

It certainly would over a short distance. Argos sell suitable units,
IIRC.

All I know is it was no greater than 24 hours - and appeared to have
happened overnight.

No, you can't get away with fraud like that.

And people wonder why Sky have to impose these restrictions...

All call-backs are generally implemented overnight (I suspect that
this is part of the agreement Sky have made with the telecom operator
so as to use excess night-time capacity).

If I had programmed this I would have gone for a 1 hour window for
both calls, with repeats until successful.
