I didn't realise this and I am thinking of getting Sky +. This is a real
pain actually - it's obviously by design that Sky offers no way to remove
the red dot but isn't it offensive to have the thing inflicted on you when
you're already paying a lot of money every month?

It's probably not as bad as being told what channel you are watching by a big
graphic in a top corner, so convienent to block peoples faces, even the yanks
have the decency to put their DOGs in the bottom corners.
Even worse is the self promotion of future programming plastered on the screen
during the program you actually want to watch, compared to those two the red dot
and variations thereof is quite a minor annoyance:)

With SKY+ and other HD recorders actually watching programming "live"
becomes a thing of the past, there really isn't any need to put up with
ad breaks and being a slave to the TV schedulers.
Once you timeshift everything using SKY+ the red dot isn't an issue since it
isn't recorded by the box due to the interactive features it links to not being
there when you finally come to watch the program.

Fair point. Even if I thought properly about getting a red-dot remover (you
can only now red-then-backup to remove the red dot if doing it, for example,
on a channel that uses it in the background before they have a programme that
does it permanently - eg. during Will & Grace before Big Brother on C4),
nothing in the world would stop a channel like Sky One from scrunching the
screen up and chattering away over the top of a programme's end credits the
split second they begin.

Well, on the plus side at least they didn't dare talk over the end credits
after the time reached 7am during season 3 of '24', given the incredible
ending (which I won't reveal here in case anyone's watching the repeats that
started recently)

When the phones were off in Manchester at the end of March due to an
underground fire, courtesy of BT, I read one page of news on BBC1 Ceefax and
looked on BBC1's "BBCi" service to see if there was any more news about it.

There wasn't, but what I did get was the same page of text spread over THREE
BBCi pages, since the rest was full of adverts and menu crap, like when you're
looking at the ITV schedules on Teletext and half the ****ing screen's taken
up with 'home loan' ads. Absolute ********. Oh, and it was ****-slow as well
on a silver Panasonic box.

All Sky digiboxes inflict the red dot on you when this is broadcast
and the only way to get rid of it is to press back-up (or go into
playback mode on a Sky+) or use a Sky-Eye type device which
effectively just presses back-up for you.

Non-Sky digiboxes never display the red dot but they can't receive
encrypted Sky channels (pay or FTV) either.
