Going from Sky to NTL - any opinions?

My sister has the Sky Family Pack and Disney, but no landline (her 12-month
minimum subs was completed at a previous address) and just uses her mobile to
make calls.

However, she's looking to get the equivalent package on NTL and use their
phone system for calls to landlines so has worked out that overall it'll be
cheaper.

I've no experience of NTL's quality of service over the digital TV side of
things, and until the competition is opened up for line rental in the coming
months, BT want to charge £10.50/month for that, and despite there being an
old socket in an upstairs bedroom, BT wanted to charge nearly £100 for putting
one in downstairs when they reconnect.

Occasionally BT have cheap "reconnect to BT" offers, and when I did it 5.5
years ago I only paid £10 for the whole thing, plus the usual line rental of
course.

All opinions welcome. TIA,

I have been using NTL for the last 5 years for both phone and TV (and
internet), and the service has been fine so far.

However, forget about anything interactive (at least here in Glasgow). It
can take as long as a few minutes for a simple text page to download on
their "TV guide" page, and pressing the Interactive button results in having
to wait for the page to download for at least 3-4 minutes, only to find out
that it is as good as a blank page. I have yet to find anything useful with
their interactive service, and always end up re-booting the box
(disconnecting and connecting) when I get fed up waiting for it to download
after accidentally pressing the button.

Not sure if this is still going but I'm moving soon and was contacted by NTL
over taking out a TV package FREE because I had Cable modem service and
telephone service.

(Only a version of Freeview channels from the list they gave me tho')

Well,Line rental for me is free having vable modem service (Though my phone
service is a set fee for free local calls up to 59 minutes,Similar to BT's
service I think?)
I too was amazed how much BT wanted to re-connect the phone line (Is'nt it
usually to install a completely new line from telegraph pole to property?)

Occasionally BT have cheap "reconnect to BT" offers, and when I did it 5.5
years ago I only paid £10 for the whole thing, plus the usual line rental

Yes,I think this is if the main phone socket/line is already installed and
the engineer can connect you up without visiting though.

If NTL Worls is anything to go by though (E-Mail down a lot of the
time,Having to switch servers etc) I'd hope their TV service is'nt the same!
I do know *Press Red* is practically none working on NTL though...phoning
NTL always gets you the "Oh,There's a Network problem" reply :(

TBH though (and fair) I've had no problems with their phone service and find
it a lot cheaper than BT :-)

All opinions welcome. TIA,

If things are working ok, NTL is fine, but the online TV guide is
particularly slow and you can't see ahead more than one day.

NTL customer service is notoriously appalling because it seems that they
have no interest in investing in even the necessary minimum infrastructure.
A pity the people who work there because there morale must be very low.

In my case, he had to come in and install a socket (there was one in another
room which never got used though and the wire had been taken out anyway) but
it must've been a good offer at the time.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Watch out, if she does not go for one of the free options as NTL have or
will be starting to charge by the minute for all calls. So a couple of
seconds will be charged as a whole minute, not so bad when calling a
landline but very expensive when calling a mobile or internationally. The
minimum cost of a daytime call to T-mobile would cost 30p, and mobiles will
not be included in the free call packages. They will also charge for bill
itemisation, as most people will not have it they will not know why their
bills have shot up.

Anyway you can always have Onetel (www.onetel.co.uk) on cable lines.

My thoughts

I have left sky to go to ntl almost a year ago

benefits are

1) No red dot (no interactive crap either- player cam pah)
2) Its cheaper BT+ Sky much dearer than NTL for TV and phone
3) Much cheaper if you want PPV footy - only £1.00 a month !!!
4) Bundle in Broadband and you have everthing in one package at a good
price
5) customer service ok - but they shrugged shoulders at my windows
probs when first set up on BB
6) the channel order can be customised to suit the viewer so as you
scan the channels you see the ones you want - much better than sky
7) EPG for listings is poor compared to sky- so you can use the sky
box you already have
8) few channels not on ntl - only one I miss is fox news- no nazi news
fix for me

Not sure why you think that it is MUCH cheaper - not according to my
calculations (assuming you use OneTel or the like for all your calls, and
only pay BT for the line). I am on the Family pack with NTL, and comparing
that with BT + Sky seem very much the same as far as price is concerned.

BTW, I am on my way in the other direction due to a house move to an area
not covered by NTL, so may still live to regret my comments...

7) EPG for listings is poor compared to sky- so you can use the sky
box you already have
8) few channels not on ntl - only one I miss is fox news- no nazi news
fix for me

BT will charge to install an extension, or move a master socket. However, if
there is NO socket in the house, perhaps even the wire down the wall is
missing, they will have to install a new one under the free reconnection
offer (This assumes BT have provided service previously at the address). The
engineer would usually ask where you want the master socket.

With regards to the TV, your sister will receive a second (third, fourth,
fifth) hand box from NTL.

They really twist the reconnection offer any way they want to, don't they?

I guess I must've had the socket, but no wire to it for some reason, when I
had it installed for £10. Perhaps it was a special offer that didn't rip the
customer off at the time.

Of course, if she didn't spend so much time on the phone...

How so? If the wiring's intact, they re-activate it FOC, if any wiring needs
repairing, or replacing, this is also done FOC. If, on the other hand, a
customer wants something moving, or something in addition to the original
wiring, then a charge is made.

Pipex is cheaper than NTL (and more reliable)

I'd been with NTL world in the past when BB was via the STB but quit when
quitting the TV service and E-Mail worked on and off back then.
When I returned to NTL to save cash on phone and broadband,I thought they
may have improved but since found it most unreliable :-(
A pity really that Pipex can't be used on NTL phonelines,I found connection
faster and more reliable.

The NTL sales people say *It's a 5 star system* They did'nt say whether they
was good or bad stars tho' :-/
I can't fault the actual phone service though,Tv choice is'nt great
(although it almost saves on heating alone the way those STB's run so hot!

(*) BT have recently announced they will be scrapping "BT Standard" in
July 2004, but there will be a new cheaper "BT Together Option 1" at
£10.50 per month.

If any part of the wiring is missing, then it is repaired FOC: pole to

wall
eye; wall eye to entry point; entry point to socket.

Why not just remove the socket upstairs and make sure the wire doesn't

enter
the property?

About 3 years ago I had a massive argument with BT which ended in me
cancelling my line, being the kind of person I am and he mood I was in, I
insisted they even remove the wire from the telegraph pole to my house! (I
know, buts how much they wound me up!). Any way after many arguments they
did remove the wire to my house. So i was left with no BT sockets wires etc
in my property.

About 18 months ago I wanted to go on broadband and my local cable company
(Telewest) could not offer this down my street. They only option I had was
BT !!!!!

I telephoned them and said I wanted to be re-connected so I could get
broadband, I said I would not be using it for calls....quess what she said I
could re-conect for free.

And they did re-wired from the pole to a new master socket for free! I the
signed up with Broadband (not BT though!). I now pay £10 a month just for
the box.
