Another Sky+ Question
I'm thinking about getting Sky installed again, and would love to have Sky+.
My question is, if I was to get the standard sky installed (the £1 deal), then buy a Sky+ box (from ebay for example) - would it work? I've seen references to needing a 'Quad LNB' - where do these go? (as in, would I need an engineer to install this). Also, do Sky still charge for subscribing to Sky+ and how would they feel about me buying the box elsewhere? Sorry if this has been asked before - I couldn't find anything through google. Regards, Lee |

A normal Sky box requires only one feed from the LNB since it only contains only one RF decoder. On SKY+ you can watch one channel while recording another (or with the later software you can now record 2 channels simutanously). This requires 2 seperate RF feed for the twin RF decoders in the SKY+ digi box. A "normal" LNB typically only has one RF output, whereas the quad LNB contains 4 RF outputs which the SKY+ digi box will take up two of these. If you already have SKY you would most probably have the single RF LNB in which case you would have to replace the existing LNB with a quad LNB and run one extral shielded RF cable from the new LNB back to your digi box. Looking at the ebay prices for SKY+ (they are closing at £170 to £180 plus P&P), IMHO I would suggest that you consdier getting SKY+ installed in the first place especially if you can get the £1 install. |
Thanks Gordon,
The only reason I was thinking of getting the regular sky first, then buying a + box was because I could then sell the normal box to recoupe some of the outlay - plus I've heard a couple of places selling recon + boxes for £99. In terms of replacing the LNB, where does this go? Is it something I could easily do myself (I realise this probably sounds like a really stupid question - my apologies). Thanks again, Lee |

Are you confident climbing up there? And you have to line it up with the signal. I got an installer to replace mine, but I added an extra cable myself (the Sky+ uses 2 outputs and there are 2 spare) |

Please do tell where you have seen SKY+ for £99, I could do with a second one as the second hand one I got from ebay has a really noisy disk in it. I am not sure I want to spend any more money replacing the disk if I can get a recon SKY+ for £99. Do you know if this includes the quad LNB and if these are V2 SKY+ digi boxes? In terms of replacing the LNB, where does this go? Is it something I could easily do myself (I realise this probably sounds like a really stupid question - my apologies). The Quad LNB replaces the single feed LNB that sits at the end of the "pole" on your disk. In theory it should be a simple job (assuming your disk is easy to access) and I have been told that if done carefully you do not need to realign your dish. Not too sure how true this is as some other posts would suggest that dish realignment is necessary. Then you will have to chase another cable down from the dish to the location of your digi box. |
If you get + from Sky the normal box is yours anyway, you can do what you
like with it. PKH "TheChillPill" wrote in message ... It's a deal where you get a refurbished (not new) box from Sky.

I don't have the URL to hand right now, but there was a site I'd come across
that had them for £99 (no install or anything included with that though unfortunately). Now that I know it's going to be an engineer job (not good with ladders!), it probably won't be worthwhile doing it the way I was intending, so I guess it's going to be a case of getting the Sky+ installed first time around instead. Anyone know of any deals coming up (or anything likely in the near future?) Lee |
