Hello all,
Just like to wish a happy birthday to SKY. My birthday is on 5-Feb and I
was born in 1987, which probably explains my fascination with SKY, so happy
17th to me, and happy 15th to SKY! Here's hoping I grow with SKY and
vice-versa.

Isn't Sky 20 years old, we had Sky in the mid 80's via cable (Washington,
Tyne & Wear) , it was renamed Sky in 1984 after it was bought by Murdoch in
1983 (then called Satellite Television Ltd and only broadcasting via
EUTELSAT satellites).

Forgive me if I'm wrong !

SKY HISTORY 1981-NOW

October 1981 UK company Satellite Television begins test transmissions of a
direct-to-home satellite service from UK to Europe.

April 26 1982 Launch of Satellite Television, transmitting two hours of
mainly British programmes each night to 200,000 homes in Norway, Finland,
Switzerland and Malta from UK.

May 1983 Rupert Murdoch's News International buys a 65 per cent stake in
Satellite Television, which increases its output from two to six hours a day
as it moves onto Eutelsat.

January 16 1984 Satellite Television, now owned by Rupert Murdoch, is
re-launched as Sky Channel.

February 5 1989 Sky Television launches a UK direct-to-home satellite
service via the Astra 1A satellite. Instead of using MAC encoding, it uses
PAL, arguing that this is not a direct broadcasting by satellite (DBS)
service. Four channels are offered: Sky Channel, Eurosport, Sky Movies and
Sky News.

March 25 1990British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB) provides a 'service launch
' to around 270,000 cable subscribers.

November 2 1990 UK's DBS failing franchise holder British Satellite
Broadcasting (BSB) and Rupert Murdoch's Sky Television merge to become
British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB). The official DBS approach is abandoned,
along with the Marcopolo satellites, in favour of expanding the Sky strategy

October 1 1998 BSkyB launches Sky Digital, its satellite digital television
service.
