Just got Sky+ - lots of questions
I just got Sky+ installed and have all day to play around
with it. Can anyone help me out with some questions I have. 1. I dont seem to have a Sky card anymore, I cant see my old card in the digibox, is this normal? 2. How do I know what version box I have? Mine is silver with a black middle section. I used the £100 offer last month to get Sky+. 3. What is the latest software version? I currently have 1.3.0, and it doesnt allow me to record two shows that clash. Will a forced upgraded fix this? 4. The series link feature has me confused. If I setup a link for 'enterprise', will it record next weeks show as well or will it record the next showing of enterprise which knowing Sky will be a repeat. 5. I noticed that a 1 hour show takes up 6%, that's only 16hrs of recording time! What happens when I run out of space and I have a show to record? Will Sky+ just delete the oldest show like a Tivo does? 6. Why cant you search for a show by inputting it's name? This is one of the best features of the Tivo, why haven't Sky done this? 7. What happens if I am recording two shows at once and someone trys to change channels? Will a message appear warning them that I am recording a program? 8. I currently have my Tivo unplugged, is anyone using their Tivo with Sky+? Thanks. |

Whats the difference between automatic and manual, i'd rather Sky didnt start deleting the shows I have recorded and aint got around to. 8. I currently have my Tivo unplugged, is anyone using their Tivo with Sky+? Many use a Tivo - the general advice seems to be "Don't get rid of it" Well as it stands I think I will get rid of the Tivo and just add a bigger HD to Sky+. Anyone want a 1yr old Tivo in great condition. boxed (no lifetime sub), only £160 inc p+p. |

There is a subtle bug in the latest firmware that can cause problems with items recorded in the beyond 40Gb region, especially if the box is rebooted after, say, a power cut. It's known as the '17 min' bug and is well documented. It's anyone's guess if Sky are even bothering to try and fix it seeing as it mainly afflicts non-standard drives. Regards Mark |

Either scroll through pages and pages of the EPG, or scroll through pages and pages of the A-Z listings. 7. What happens if I am recording two shows at once and someone trys to change channels? Will a message appear warning them that I am recording a program? 8. I currently have my Tivo unplugged, is anyone using their Tivo with Sky+? I use my TiVo with Sky+, one of the reasons is illustrated in your point 6. I find Sky+ great for recording something on another channel or DD movies, apart from that I almost exclusively use my Tivo. -- Sean Black |

Either scroll through pages and pages of the EPG, or scroll through pages and pages of the A-Z listings. I cant understand why Sky haven't implemented a feature like this. I know the company behind the tivo have patented a lot of their interface but surely Sky can find a better way of searching for shows than what it has currently. 8. Well i've just cancelled my Tivo subscription and plan on selling it over the next few days. I would have loved to keep it but I cant stand paying £10 a month for the EPG. It's still by far the best piece of kit I have ever purchased though, it's a disgrace that it hasnt caught on in the UK. I'd love to see a all in one Tivo with Sky built in and a DVD-Recorded, now that would be very cool. I've got a few more questions regarding Sky+ Do season links carry over onto the next season like they do with the Tivo? Is Sky+ always recording like the Tivo is? With the Tivo I could just rewind the last 30 minutes of any show, will Sky+ do this? Thanks. |

Well that's a major pain :-( 16hrs isnt really that long recording time if you go on holiday for a week or so. It's a shame that you cant knock down the quality of the recording to save space like the Tivo can. |

You can set the length of instant rewind from 'none' to an hour, I believe. So the short answer is yes. You can also save it to the hard disc as a named file, should the fancy take you. Still got to be worth a lifetime sub if you can afford it. If not you should get a decent price for it on Ebay. It's still by far the best piece of kit I have ever purchased though, it's a disgrace that it hasnt caught on in the UK. Yep, if only Tivo had got the same sort of advertising as Sky+. I'd love to see a all in one Tivo with Sky built in and a DVD-Recorded, now that would be very cool. That would be just about perfect. I've got a few more questions regarding Sky+ Do season links carry over onto the next season like they do with the Tivo? Not sure, but I think I read somewhere that if a show missed a week and then the season link got lost. This may have been sorted out by now. I've had no direct experience one way or another with it as yet so I can't say for sure. Is Sky+ always recording like the Tivo is? With the Tivo I could just rewind the last 30 minutes of any show, will Sky+ do this? Yes it is. Thanks. -- Sean Black |
