Sky+ to DVD writer in another room?

I'd like to archive stuff onto DVD but probably as with most people my
Tv/Sky+ is in one room and the PC another, quite a distance away and
certainly too far to run a SCART cable. Is there a realistic way of doing
this other than putting the PC on wheels?

Videosender between the Sky+ box and the PC? There have been
quite a few threads on the quality. I must confess that I haven't really
remembered the contents of said threads, but I think the general
concensus is that a good videosender is pretty decent quality. I know
that Argos sell at least one make of video sender, in fact I think they
do more than one make.

Although I have a Digisender link to my PC, I tend not to record stuff
onto my PC from the TV. I also have a Digisender link to another
TV/VCR combo in my daughter's room, and I have no problem recording
that TV's output into tape there, so I can't see what it wouldn't work
equally well with a DVD on the receiving end, rather than a VCR

Only 10m not 15m according to the link but that might *just* do it thanks. I
can run the leads through when I'm using it and then disconnect when not. IF
10m isnt enough at least I can look for someone who makes a longer one now.

Presumably all I need on my PC (new one not yet ordered) is some type of
analogue TV-in like a hauppage or an ADI-all-in-wonder kind of jobby, for
example ?

My new PC will have DVD recorder in it, silly to spend another £250+ to do
the functions it can already do.

Not at all because it won't necessarily do it all.

My standalone Philips DVDR75 does a lot more to get the programmes from the
TiVo onto a DVD+RW disc, editing each title to suit, adding a menu image, etc,
and then putting the finished RW disc into my PC to copy across to a DVD-R and
finalise it (since a DVD-R is about a third of the cost of a +RW), and then
erase the RW disc to start again.

And if the recorder's in a different room, apart from the loss in signal
quality, how are you going to start/stop precisely?

It doesnt need to be precise, since I'll do the editing on the PC (which
will mainly consist of trimming the start and end). Can also use DVD +RW on
the PC for things I dont want to keep indefintely (Or just keep them on the
much bigger PC hard disc) and xfer long term films/programmes onto DVD R.

Loss in quality would be an issue though, that might tilt the balance. I
suppose if I wait for a year there will be writers for £99 as they have just
dipped under £200 from what I heard yesterday.

I know we're getting a little of topic here, but what do people use to
edit avi/vob files....I have a video of my brothers party, but want to
take bits out to suit.....

Can't answer your question for sure but try lurking in
alt.video.dvd.software

I've heard Pinnacle Studios mentioned a few times on there,Loads of URL's
posted to help you too (No doubt a quick look will find your answer!)
