I don't see why. They have the goods, they fix the price. They should
then sell to anyone who wants to buy at that price.

EU residents live in a single market now and
companies must be obliged to treat the entire EU as one area, unless
they don't trade at a distance at all and only do counter sales.

However, don't other laws or treaties override this - as in Sky's broadcasting
business?

This is the erroneous argument that they use. However the single
market replaces this. The whole point of being a large single market
(or being a large single EU for that matter) is that you can set the
rules, rather than having the rules imposed on you from outside.

I presume the TV in question is PAL? In other words, noone outside the UK
would want it anyway.

If you want to know about discrimination, you should try relocating to
France as I have just done - the French, allegedly pro European, ignore
European law - I'm British and as a European have the right to live and work
where I chose in Europe - Earned Health benefits (National Insurance
contributions) are under EU law transferable. Five months down the line, I
am still not covered under French Health system, still do not have a
residency permit/id card - which is compulsory, still don't have a Social
Security number (and so the right to work here) - if you're not French, they
block you at every turn and don't care about Europe and European rights -
they'll give you the documentation when you have a job - of course however,
you can't get a job until you've got the documentation - Catch 22

All of europe except France broadcast analouge television in PAL albeit with
a different sound spacing than the UK.

Er Germany use PAL, Spain uses PAL, Portugal uses PAL, Belgium uses PAL,
Netherlands uses PAL, Denmark uses PAL, Sweden uses PAL, Austria uses PAL,
Italy uses PAL, etc etc etc. Ireland even uses PAL I.

The French are masters of being two-faced. They do it all day and
every day. They are the first to vote for European laws and the last
to implement them, unless they happen to be in their favour, in which
case they implement them immediately and cry about others not
respecting them. They have been liable for more EU fines for
non-respect of EU legislation than any other member state, ever. They
were half the anchor of the single currency 3% public deficit
requirement, which they ignored within 2 years of the Euro being used.
They buy up British utility companies yet illegally allow no
competition to the state monopolies in their own country. They stand
around whimpering whilst the US and the UK remove dictators at great
cost then want to be first in the queue to rebuild the saved country
afterwards (at a price, of course) whilst loudly proclaiming that "we"
have struck a great blow for democracy. They refuse coalition planes
the right to overfly France on their way to bomb Saddam or Gadaffi and
at the same time willingly harbour any and every deported third world
despot in need of a place to live. They refuse to allow British beef
into France for two years in full defiance of an EU directive to do so
and at the same time cover up the fact that HIV contaminated blood was
given to French hemophiliacs knowingly for several years. They send in
the world's most incompetent marines to blow up a boat owned and
operated by Greenpeace and committing no crime. They sell arms to
Argentina when it is at war with the UK.

Their national emblem is a cockerel: a bird that makes a lot of noise,
struts around fancying itself and bonks a lot but doesn't actually do
anything useful at all. They fart in our general direction and this
just about sums them up.

Oops - looks like I was wrong - sorry.

Looks like I've too quickly fallen into the French mentality that it is the
centre of Europe and if they have SECAM then SECAM is the only system in
Europe!!!!

I note you mention Spain - I'm right on the Spanish border and can pick up
Spanish TV on my UK set - but there is no sound - any ideas why that would
be and if there is anything I could do to get the sound?

thanks

Yes. Spain uses PAL B/G - as does most of continental Europe. The British
Isles use PAL I (see above). The difference is in the sound separation.
Your problem is you bought a crap PAL-I-only TV. Don't do so next time.
Personally, I buy all my TVs and VCRs in France where it is easy to get
PAL-all-flavours/SECAM/NTSC TVs for less than the cost of an equivalent
PAL-I-only UK TV.

You specialise in getting things wrong, don't you? Ireland uses PAL-I -
just like the UK.
