Sky+ box slowing down?

My box has slowed down, to the extent that it takes maybe 30 secs to respond
to each remote request. Switching it off fixes this for a few minutes to an
hour or so and then it comes back again. I'm just about to reformat the disk
which I am confident will fix this, but I wondered if anyone else had seen
this problem?
As an example of the behaviour, if I press the EPG button, it switches to
the EPG but the sound from the previously watched program continues for 30
seconds or so rather than getting the normal background musak. Pressing page
down (say) has no effect, so I'll do it a few times, and then all of a
sudden it will page down several times as if I'd just pressed the remote
several times. Or, if I go to the SKy+ menu showing whats been recorded, it
might take 30 secs or a minute to display whats there.

I'm assuming that the disk is badly fragmented or otherwise screwed up hence
hopefully a reformat will fix it. PITA to get through the 'buffer' of all
the stuff thats been recorded so I can wipe the disk though.

Mine started doing this about a week ago, but the delay is not so great -
maybe 5 to 10
seconds; also one of the guys at work has the problem. I have been watching
the group
to see if there were any others before assuming it was my box.

Have we had another 'upgrade'!?

Well, so far, a disk reformat(4,0,1 , select and then select 'full system
refresh' or similar wording) has fixed it. Just to be sure I also forced a
s/w reload (I think) by powering off, but I'd tried that before with limited
effect, so a badly fragmented (or just screwed up) disk seems the most
likely option.
I did find the box on channel 998 a few days ago so I assume another s/w
download had taken place, maybe that has, to use a technical phrase, ****ed
things up?

My Sky+ regularly goes to ch. 998 for no obvious reason.

So does mine. Been doing so for the last month or so.

I thought that meant a s/w download had taken place? Not true?

It will always go to 998 after an upgrade. It being on 998 doesn't
necessarily mean there's been an upgrade though.

Is there another reason it would go there (assuming no one selected it)

Select the main sky menu, go across the top to services, then do 4 0 1 and
press select, and then choose the option full system reset. This will erase
everything.

Not necessarily. All Sky boxes will go to ch. 998 when rebooted, and a
reboot can be caused by a software download. It can also be caused by
a power cut. My Sky+ goes to ch. 998 from time to time without either
a power cut or a reboot. I have even seen it do this whilst I was
watching programmes.

Yeah, a powercut, a crash, etc.

Same here. Often comes out of standby on 998. The Mk1 box upstairs
is unaffected, comes back on, on whatever it was switched off on.

Has only reset to 998 while I was watching it on one occasion, and that was
at exactly 22:00:00. Very odd.
