ISDN & Sky

I have 1 telephone line which has a modem, fax etc., as well as a
connection to Sky. I cannot get a connection to Sky Box Office or to
Sky+. Sky refer me to BT and vice versa.

The independent Sky+ installer said that this a common problem yet Sky
do not mention it in their literature and don't want to get involved. It
is not just a question of the REN rating as I can' get a service even
when I disconnect the PC, modem and fax. It appears that the only
solution will be to pay for a separate analogue 'phone line.

Anyone any comments, suggestions.

You mention ISDN - what exactly do you have? Home Highway, Business
Highway or ISDN2(e). If ISDN2(e) what sort of terminal adapter
provides the analogue port the digibox requires?

Why not just ignore it? If you are desperate to order PPV you can do
so manually. The phone connection serves no other purpose.

Thank you for taking the trouble to respond. I regret that I am not very
technical and have been told that I have ADSL not ISDN.

Sky Box Office worked perfectly on my old analogue line but would not
call back on the ADSL line. I am aware that I have exceeded the REN
rating but am reluctant to spend nearly £50 on a REN booster because, as
I said in my posting, I have already tried reducing the REN rating by
disconnecting equipment.

Once again thanks for trying to help this technophobe !!!!!!!!!!!!

First things first. Can you make an ordinary telephone call via your ADSL
line?
(Via the socket on the splitter, one port of which will go to your PC and
the other to your telephony equipment) You should be able to plug an
ordinary phone into that and make a call. Can you?

Tumbleweed,

Thanks for your interest. I can confirm that I have several telephone
handsets as well as a fax and 2 modems plugged into the ADSL line and
they all work perfectly. I have also plugged a handset into the socket
earmarked for Sky and that also connects to BT without any problem.

In which case, one very real possibility is that a fault has developed
subsequent to your new installation (or maybe as a result of it?). If you
can phone out of a socket but the Sky cant, then i'd say that the sky is the
problem not your connection!

Once again thanks for trying to help.

Just to clarify things. My TV can communicate with Sky. I proved this by

responding to one of their on-line polls. The problem is that Sky can't
send a film or whatever BACK down the line as they are getting
"engaged".

I don't think I have any option other to re-install my old analogue
(second) line if I want to receive Sky+.

In that case, can you phone _into_ a phone plugged into your ADSL line?
(when its the only one)

Again if the answer is yes, it must be the Sky at fault.

If you have other stuff plugged in as well, I suppose there might be an
issue with those devices, maybe one of them has priority over grabbing the
call? So for example might it be your fax machine answering the Sky call?

However, it was my understanding that when you book a film , that is
registered on the card which then makes a call back to Sky so they can bill
you for it. If it cant make the call there and then, it will retry later and
keep doing so, and you can watch quite a few films before ist credit limit
will be used up and it wont let you make any more calls. AFAIK (I might be
wrong) the Sky box itself wont be called _from_ Sky. The film certainly isnt
being sent down the line as you seemingly believe.

I cant see your original message so apologies if Im not getting the scenario
correct but as I recall it the issue was that the SKy box couldnt connect to
Sky to authorise films?

YES. NEVER HAVE ANY PROBLEM. SEVERAL PHONES PLUGGED AND THEY ALL WORK.

Again if the answer is yes, it must be the Sky at fault.

SKY REFUSE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY." THEY'LL PROVIDE THE SERVICE WHEN THE
LINE IS FIXED - GO AND TALK TO BT!" CUE TO BANG HEAD ON WALL!

If you have other stuff plugged in as well, I suppose there might be an

I HAVE TRIED AFTER DISCONNECTING ALL EQUIPMENT BAR 1 PHONE.

AS I SAID, I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE TECHNOLOGY. MAYBE THE PROBLEM WITH SKY
IS THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO BILL ME?

SKY & THE INSTALLER ADMIT THAT THEY HAVE HAD A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS WITH
ADSL LINES.

I cant see your original message so apologies if Im not getting the scenario

I CAN LIVE WITHOUT SKY BOX OFFICE AND AM PRIMARILY INTERESTED IN SKY+.

ONCE AGAIN, THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST.
