Upgraded Sky+ now rattles!

I replaced the hard drive in my Sky+ box with a 120GB Maxtor recently (the upgrade was quick and easy - managing to watch everything I wanted to from the old one was the problem ;-) - however now when I rewind or fast-forward there's an annoying rattle (normal playback is fine). Has anybody else had the same similar problem, and is there anything I can do to ameliorate it? Charlie Its just the heads bouncing on the platters :-) Seriously though, maybe the disk is just noisier than the old one which presumably was chosen partly for this feature as the box was to be used in a lounge environment. The large scsi disks I have in my PC have noisy disk actuators and I wouldn't use them in my living room. |
I found the noise was more prominant on a 7200 disk. I now use a 5400 disk,
much quieter. "BillR" wrote in message ... Go he http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/setacm.htm This contains a utility called AMSET which enables acoustic management for a variety of Maxtor HDDs - this makes the drive quieter at the expense of speed, might be worth a look. Obviously you need to hook the drive up to a PC to do this, but once the change has been made it is permanent. Hellraiser.......... |

Can anyone say what's the best make of 120g hd to upgrade to? Thanks The Samsung SV1203N seems to be a good choice. It is reported to run smoothly and quietly at a relatively cool temperature. There are alternatives, however: http://www.hummer.co.uk/drives-tested.htm http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/t/30514/ds.html |

Thanks for the helpful link, however I notice that it says: The AMSET.EXE utility enables, disables, and sets levels for the Acoustic Management (operating sound levels) for the following hard drive families (and newer) ONLY: - DiamondMax Plus 40 UDMA/100 - DiamondMax 60 UDMA/100 - DiamondMax VL 30 UDMA/100 - D540X - D740X The capitalised ONLY has put me off trying it out on my 120GB drive...!
