05/09/03 Sky+ monthly fee dropped
As exclusively revealed last month by Sky Digi Online, Sky have announced
this afternoon that the monthly £10 fee to watch Sky+ will be dropped. As
long as you subscribe to any two Sky Premium channels you will be entitled
to have your £10 Sky+ subscription fee waived. Sky Family pack customers
and
those on lower subscription packages will continue to pay £10 per month
Sky+
subscription charge. Sky also announced that the cost of a Sky mirror
subscription is to reduced from £15 to £10. The new prices are in effect,
as we reported, from the 1st of October 2003.

We have the sky movies world package (£33 pcm) does that mean that we would
not have to pay a sky + subscription fee? If that is the case then what are
the best deals on sky+ boxes?

So question is, will there be the same massive demand as when the sky box
became 'free'. I'm definitely tempted, but can imagine a long wait for an

hmm ... family pack and below pay the fee. Thats got to be 70% of all
subscribers.




At the last report 55% of SKY DTH subscribers are on the SKYworld package.
Once this SKY+ news is confirmed then I will be upgraded my subscription package
to qualify, I downgraded to the family pack when I had SKY+ installed back in 2001.
I will also have to consider getting a larger hard drive as well:)

That's correct. The Sky+ subscription fee will be waived for you.

If you're looking to buy them new, independent dealers are selling
them for £250 whereas you can buy one direct from Sky for £199.
However, if you buy it from Sky they have to install it too (so no
DIY jobs).

Used Sky+ boxes for sale aren't all that common, but there are some
on eBay if you would prefer to go down that route.

be much having. As for getting sky to install am I right in thinking
the charge is usually £50 and thus getting sky to do it would be the

The Sky+ installation charges may also be changing on October 1st, I haven't
received any confirmation of this yet.

The other thing I was wondering was do people think that now sky will
waive the fee for a lot of users, will there be a sudden demand in
take up. i.e. should we act quickly to avoid a long wait or is that
unlikely to be a problem in the next 6 months.

I expect there will be a massive rush of new Sky+ installations when this
news breaks to the masses, and this will almost certainly result in longer
waits. It might be wise to get it done now, and pay the extra £10 for one
month.

I received a mail shot as a 'Loyal Sky Customer', that they would charge me
£200 for the Sky plus box, install it for free, resite my existing box and
waiver the £10 Sky plus subscription if I paid £15/month for the same full
package as I currently subscribe to. I took the offer up as I thought
£15/month was okay for a second subscription.
I did my own wiring up as I don't trust Sky Installers to do it properly.
Even then there was still a cock up as Sky sent the Sky plus activation to
the wrong viewing card.
I'll be even happier if they drop the £15 to £10 !!. I'll wait and see.

I currently pay £28.50 a month.
I do not consider £38 a month "whopping", the only reason I downgraded
was because the originally installer was messing me about and the only way
to show my annoyance was to pay them less and back in 2001 I was still
benefiting from the "reduction" for early SKY D subscribers so an additional
£10 on my subscription hurt less than it would now days.
I have been paying £28.50, family pack and SKY+ although it was £26
before the last price rise and less than that back in 2001.
My family will get value out of the full SKYworld package and so by taking
that and not having to pay £10 a month for SKY+ it is a good deal (for me).

That is all I am saying, this deal works for me, I do not claim it will work for
everyone:)

Indeed. I cancelled my Family Pack sub because there's nothing on any
of the channels that isn't either rubbish or ruined by appalling
presentation / DOGs. So I'm paying £10 a month for Sky+ only. If
they'd dropped the £10 a month for Family Pack, I might have
considered resubscribing.

Do I understand correctly that you need to subscribe to two premium
channels? How does that work? For example, could I subscribe to the
basic £12 a month package and then get the sports on top? Does that
qualify? Does FilmFour count?

Have you any evidence of that? Tivo seem to think otherwise.

I only go by what the denizens of the Tivo forums say. They usually
know what they are talking about when it comes to Tivos. AFAIK Sky
handled the initial marketing and CS contracts until recently when
marketing was discontinued and the CS contract was extended.
