Sky Magazine, September 2003 - Dual Recording

I see that it's actually mentioned in the magazine that dual recording
is "coming soon", and that you'll be able to watch a
previously-recorded programme at the same time. The price of the Sky+
box is also back down to £199. The question remains, of course...
when we we actually see it?

Hi,

they say it is purely a software upgrade. Is the box really powerful enough to be
recording 2 channels and playing back another at the same time?

Yes, easily.

Yes, easily.

The next trick is to find two programmes showing at the same time - which DO
NOT get a quick repeat within the week, are subscription channel programmes
and are actually worth recording.

Actually, it will be nice not to have to hunt down the quick repeats -- the A-Z is only,
what, 24 hours? And it's not that quick to find a program on A-Z anyway.

And yes, I can search on Digiguide, but it's a lot more user friendly to just record the
instance you see without worrying about program conflicts.

But what would be really nice is the ability to instantly record a show you're viewing,
including buffer. I'd prefer that over two-channel recording.

Yep - Tivo features this and it is a great facility (it allows you to record
a show including the portion already in the live tv buffer). Whilst Sky+
has many benefits, especially lossless recording quality, its handling of
the Live TV buffer is not brilliant. I find it very annoying not to be able
to drop into TV Guide without losing the buffer...

Yes. This doesn't require any huge processing power.

I don't have that problem as I use a TiVo, but either way if it's a regular
programme you'll know what time it gets a repeat.

Yes, Tivo's certainly have some advantages. But I don't have one.

I don't know what time it has a repeat, actually. At least not in my experience. I have
to do exactly the exercise I specified -- go to my PC and do a search on Digiguide. Be
easier if I could just press the magic "R" button on the remote and not have to worry
about it.

I was just offering an easy workaround which makes the Sky+ dual-recording
less of the big deal they make it sound.

The dual recording is a feature I'm looking forward to. For me, it would definitely be
worthwhile.

But what would be really nice is the ability to instantly record a show you're

...which TiVo can do.

Yes, I also like TiVoi's better recording intelligence. Again, though, I'm a Sky + owner,
so I'm focused on seeing improvements arrive on that platform.

Cheers

It can already do that now (rec 2 channels) thats what happens if you are
recording something and then select live pause on another channel. What it
cant do is then play back another (ie a 3rd one)at the same time. It can
only play back something else you already recorded.
