DVDR and aspect ratio

Hoping someone here can help me.

I have a Toshiba ZP38TV and normally have the 'Automatic Format' set to On
(i.e. automatic picture size selection).

I have just bought a Philips DVDR75 and have set the picture size to 14:9.
When I select the DVDR on the TV (connected to Ext2) the TV switches to 4:3.
If I then playback a pre-recorded DVD the TV switches to one of the
Widescreen options. So far, so good - but I would have preferred the DVDR
menu screen to be widescreen. However, if I record from a widescreen
source - e.g. a movie from my Sky+ unit (set to 16:9) - on playback the TV
automatically switches back to 4:3 and I have to change the screen size on
the TV manually.

Intuitively, I think that this operation is incorrect, but the Philips
helpline and the retailer tell me that this operation is correct. Does
anyone here have the same equipment? If so, can you confirm if your setup
works the same?
