RPTV yet again - fault ?
Hi again,
Well, the RPTV has turned up and it's bloody huge. Picture isn't bad from start up but I've got a question about the screen quality that some of you may be able to answer. In the past I have had cause to return both Sony and Loewe CRT TVs but have had to endure a couple of months of "it's within the manufacturer's specifications" bo**ocks before the shops chose to see sense. Anyway, I fired up the TV and there are 4 marks on the screen. They don't look like external scuffs and vary from the size of a grain of rice to a fifth of that size. Now, I'm not happy but I want to try to be realistic. Do you reckon that for a 57" screen this will be within manufacturers' specifications ? Has anyone dealt with Toshiba customer support for RPTVs ? Are they reasonable ? I'll give 'em a ring tomorrow anyhow and I can send them some photos of the problem. Apologies for all the recent posts but I've got a lot to learn about these TVs. Thanks, Keith P.S. Nath and other RPTV owners, is there any chance that this is just crap stuck to the inside of the display surface, have you heard of this before ? |
Hi Keith,
I experienced something very similar with my first ever RPTV - a 55inch from Toshiba. Sounds like dust either on the inside of the screen or it might even be on the CRTs themselves. I would reject the set as once you know where the problem areas are you can't help but be drawn to them. I had something with a Sony set which I gave up on when they replaced it 3 times and touchwood struck lucky first time with my Tosh. I wouldn't recommend taking the screen off as there is always the chance of making the problem worse by introducing further crap into the system. Let us know how you get on. Bal I doubt it'll be crap on the CRT/between the CRT or mirror because any dirt on these areas would not result in small, in-focus picture fault- it'll just show that area will be more blurry. If the area is small and in focus I would guess the interior (or in between the screen stack) has some crap somewhere. You say don't remove the screen as it'll introduce dust into the top area. Dust will find a way into the area anyway, and cleaning the screen/mirror and blowing off dirt from the lens (mine had a few wood chippings from the cabinet on the lens/between the lens & CRT tube) will result in better picture quality. It could also be residue on the inside of the screen, I'm pretty sure Toshiba use masking tape- as my screen had a slightly sticky smudge mark about 2" in diameter running vertically down the screen. Cleaned with a cloth and some mild non abrasive cleaner. |

Regarding taking the screen off myself ... doesn't this 'invalidate the warranty'. Something which I don't want to do if I can help it. I'll give Toshiba a ring and ask them to come out. Thanks, Keith P.S. Apart from this the set is absolutely fantastic. It doesn't look so hot with a poor free feed but when switched back to terrestrial even Coronation Street looked good. I haven't tried the Prog Scan DV88 input yet or the Xbox - but I hope to at the weekend when I may be able to connect it all up. The whole reason for getting one of these was because my Mrs is registered blind and had to sit very close to the old 32" CRT, unhealthily close I might add. She was overjoyed at the size of the screen and quote 'she feels like a normal person being able to watch from a distance'. A job well done :-) |
Hi Nath, Bal and others, After a couple of hours of frustrating FTPing I've now realised I was having trouble due to calling my files .jpg and opposed to .JPG Now it's all sorted there are 3 photos of the problem. The middle photo is clearest. My camera hasn't got that high a resolution :-( You can see what looks to be a piece of 'something' slightly closer up in the first and last image. What do you reckon ? www.duckpark.dsl.pipex.com Cheers, Keith Yup, definetly crap on the inside of the screen. Probably a bit of chipboard or plastic swarf from the cabinet. Remove the speaker grille first, then the screen. Use a soft clean cloth to wipe the inside of the screen. Use a torch and shine at a angle onto the mirror (look for hand smudges) Shine the torch onto each lens, and see if any bits of crap are on the lens (or between the lens and CRT) If there's dirt between the lens & CRT, you'll need to remove the four screws holding the lens down, and use a air can to spray debris away. Tighten back up, replace screen & grille. |

A job well done :-) It does look like dirt on the inside, that's why the image is black and in focus. Opening up the set will invalidate the warranty, however when I talk to the engineer they're usually pretty amazed at my knowledge, most of the time & I know more than they do! :-) . So they don't rip up the warranty. Anyway, if you want to do any of the advanced tweaks (lining etc) you'll need to open the set up. I would guess visible dirt would class as unacceptable, and a engineer should come round to sort it. For me however it's so simple it's just not worth phoning them up, sorting a day out, etc. Doing user level convergence will help, if you know anyone with experience with CRT RP's I would ask them to do full service level convergence. It brings in the colours better, and shows less haloing/overlapping of the colours. It looks much better after that (and electronic & optical focus), more closer to a PC monitor. |

What do you reckon ? www.duckpark.dsl.pipex.com Cheers, Keith That's a big set. How tall if your GF? The RP looks quite tall, I find my 42" is perfect eye level- the 57" is taller so do you find the screen a bit high? And is the brass strip reflective, and distracting? Btw I have a screenshot from my RP. Picture still looks crap compared to actual image (detail is lost, alot more clearer with lots of detail, and overall screen brightness) but you should get a idea of convergence.. alot closer after doing full service level. Before the left cheek had some red ringing to it. Make sure you have anti-pop up s/w running (ads) http://nathansilly.012webpages.com/ Also have a larger Jpeg of that picture, but I think the webspace is playing up |

She could watch Eastenders from 5'-10' away as opposed to 1' previously. It still hasn't shown her that Eastenders is ****e though :-) An engineer is calling next Monday so I'll get him to do all you've advised. When the cost of the set has depreciated slightly I might venture inside myself but not quite yet. Did pop-ups pop up then when you went to the site ? They don't for me so I didn't think I had a problem. What do you normally do about it ? Or ... are you referring to your ISP. Web-thicky here I'm afraid ;-) Thanks for all the A+ help so far, Keith |

Web-thicky here I'm afraid ;-) Thanks for all the A+ help so far, Keith I use Opera which has built-in pop up stopper. However with basic IE (with no after market ad stopper) loads of ads pop up. Pop ups are nothing to do with your ISP, it's just that site. Pop-up's are annoying, slow your connection, and can contain porny picture, and possibly viruses as well. |

However, one thing I can't quite believe is how sh*te the Freeview picture is compared to the normal analogue channels. There is a little ghosting on analogue but as soon as you switch to the box loads of fizzing and pixelation kicks in. I knew digital was bad (even with direct Telewest cable connection which I had previously) but this is unbelievable when magnified to this size. Are the general public supposed to take digital seriously ? Cheers, Keith |
