Need recomendation on universal remote.....

I just bought a home theater and I now have 5 remotes......needled to
say, my wife is not happy about that. I want a remote where I can link
several functions with one button (like turn-on DVD, turn on receiver &
switch TV to DVD). the kicker is I'm limited to about $200. Any
recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Universal Remote MX-500

Fantastic Remote!

Sony RM-VL900. I paid around $60. It's easy to use, programmable,
has macro functions. Overall I've been very happy with it. It
doesn't have the PC interface, and LCD display, or all the fancy bells
and whistles but I just wanted a simple remote that didn't need new
batteries constantly and controls everything. A good site for
reviews, codes, etc. is http://www.remotecentral.com. They even have
a "clicker picker" which asks you questions and tries to recommend a
good remote for you. It does a fair job but browse around and you'll
probably find the right one for you.

Thanks for the site. I'll check it out & the MX-500 too see which has the
features I want, though the price on the Sony is hard to ignore. I might
pick-up the Sony and use it in the bedroom regardless.

I think of 2 options primarily for this:

for touch screen - Pronto Neo (or used Pronto TSU-1000 - not 500)
for buttons - Harmony SST-659

A good resource for this with lots of reviews, forums, etc. is
www.remotecentral.com

I have a Harmony 768 and am very happy with it.

You connect it to your computer via a USB cable and program it on their
Web site. They remember your settings so you can go back and modify them
if you want.

One of the nicest things about the Harmony is you can click one button
to"Watch DVD" or "Watch TV," etc and it will turn on and set up every
needed component.

Go to www.harmonyremote.com for a test drive.

Karl

I second the Harmony. I have the SST-659 and it does anything I need. You
program it on their site and have more options for one-button control than
you can shake a stick at.

If you are computer savvy at all, consider getting a cheap JP1
compatable remote and then programming it with your computer and some
very easy to use free software tools. The Radioshack 15-2116( IR) and
15-2117(RF) are two good examples around $30 each. Using the tools
and guidance of the guys at the jp1 forum, http://www.hifi-remote.com
and http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/, these remotes can be made as
powerful as most of the other programmable remotes that cost much
more.

All the $60 - $150 remotes the others have suggested will do what you
want. But one of these JP1 remotes will be just as powerful and
extremely more verastile in how you can go about programming and
upgrading it. At least go read the beginner guides.

I bought my 15-2116 for $30. but the 15-2117 was selling for $50.
I looking forward to finishing the JP1 cable. It's a good remote.
Should be a great remote with the cable for less than $50.
