Monster cable - is it worth it?
1) Monster Cable claims to be the key to great video quality, but it is so
damm expensive! Could I use something cheaper and still get the same quality (e.g. Pacific Cable: http://www.pacificcable.com/Picture_...Name=254-525IV)??? 2) What about S-video? (Pacific Cable: http://www.pacificcable.com/Picture_...taName=SVMM-25)??? 3) Is it worth it to buy Monster Video? Will it out perform brands such as Pacific Cable?? 4) Is 25 feet too long of cable? Carlton Sheets claims that if you buy his books he'll make you a millionaire in no money down real estate. There's a much truth in the one as the other. ... Could I use something cheaper and still get the same quality Yes. You might actually get better results with cheaper stuff. Monster is 50% hype and 50% pure bull****. |

buy the best 'feeling', cheapest, shielded cables you can find with molded
ends. should come in about 1/10 the price of its monster counterpart. randy Any recommendations? |
Any recommendations?
Since I sell cable I might be suspected of bias in favor of brands I carry. Instead of a particular brand I suggest you just buy mid to low priced cable from RatShak or any other retailer. Just look for solid connections on the ends. Avoid flimsy stuff that feels like it may fall apart (it will). Virtually *all* of the blather surrounding "high end" cable is absolute bullfrank. |
I need 25', can I get this length at e.g. RatShack (I assume you are
abbreviating Radio Shack)??? Cory "Robert L. Bass" wrote in message ... Any recommendations? Since I sell cable I might be suspected of bias in favor of brands I carry. ... Cobalt Cable is an excellent value http://www.cobaltcable.com/product/p...aker_cable.htm $75 for a 25' subwoofer cable is an excellent value?? I could match their cable(s) performance for about $15: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=278%2D290 http://www.radioshack.com/basket.asp...2C15%2D1571%2C 15%2D1534%2C |

expensive! What about S-video? Is 25 feet too long of cable? I bought a 50 foot S-video cable from Monster. In comparisons of it against various other cables from Radio Shack, Jensen and Pacific, I found that the picture delivered via the Monster cable was visually better. This even while the other cables were 15 foot or less! Was it worth the $100 I paid for it? Sure, the jacketing was plenty durable for the tortured path I ran it up/over/down several walls. And the connectors make nice and snug connections. I'd love to have gotten a cable at lesser expense but this one works well enough that I'd buy another one should the need arise. I've got a mishmash of interconnects using all sorts of different vendor cabling. The one thing I've tried to do is stay as short as possible. But I've not seen an appreciable difference in video quality when using short S-video cables. Comparing 'decently made' ones, that is. The throw-away cheapies the vendors give you with the boxes are usually crap. But in swapping around 3 foot S-video cables I didn't detect any noticeable difference between the different vendors. I've heard others not have as high an opinion of their audio cables. I've likewise found little or no variation in perceptible audio quality given the short lengths I've tried to maintain using. I'm sure others have better hearing that could argue the finer points. I'm more likely to lay blame at the equipment involved (speakers, amps, receivers, etc) before I'd go nitpicking about my audio cabling qualities. Heck, the acoustics of the room suck enough that even better equipment would be a waste. Given the prices I've seen on some stuff it'd almost be cheaper for me to renovate the room instead. -Bill Kearney |

Cobalt Cable is an excellent value http://www.cobaltcable.com/product/p...aker_cable.htm No offense, but $105 for a 2 meter pair of speaker cable is a snake oil rip off. A total waste of money. I suppose if you like to spend that because it is cool looking (which is also throwing money away), but it is not going to perform better than lamp wire that Home Depot sells. Dennis |
I purchased several inexpensive cables from Parts Express. Their Dayton
line is more than adequate for home theater use: http://tinyurl.com/2pwsy "Cory Lechner" wrote in message ... 1) Monster Cable claims to be the key to great video quality, but it is so damm expensive! With the exception of rare closeout specials, Radio Shack does not have "mid to low priced cable." In some cases, Radio Shack cables sell for twice the price of comparable cables. For example, the usual price for a 6-foot Toslink fiber optic cable is $12 to $15. The Radio Shack price for this cable is $29.99: 6-Foot Digital Optical Audio Cable $29.99 Brand: RadioShack Catalog #: 15-1061 http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...oduct%5Fid=3D= 15-1061 An equally-good 6-foot Phillips fiber optic cable can be found at Wal-Mart for only $14.99: Philips Magnavox Fiber Optic Cable Model No. PM61043 Manufacturer PhilipsMagnavox (I bought two of these Wal-Mart cables and they are of very good quality. The connectors make solid contact and are well re-enforced. The cable is thick and well protected. The sound quality produced from my CD player and DVD player is excellent.) http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...D3944&product= _id=3D893811&path=3D0%3A3944%3A3996%3A3964%3A4537# long_descr |

The point was that "high end" cable claims are basically bunk. Check out some of this stuff.
http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=...tnG=Search+Fro ogle I haven't gotten around to running my wiring under the house (hey, it hasn't been even a month yet, and the football season isn't over), but I will have a hard time believing that Monster cable is that much better than all of these brands. Comments from others please. If you're running wire in the walls ensure it meets building codes. It may be worth your while to run 12 gauge, too: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd..._ID=2898&DID=7 This is approximately the same cost as noted on your links ($.20/ft) and is available in 100', 500', 1000' lengths. Wall plates, binding posts, etc. are also available there. I also had to run eight interconnects (25'). I used RG6 with crimp-on RCA connectors (I already had the tools). Total cost was less than $50 for the interconnects. I have approximately $10,000 invested in that HT system--the cost of wires and cables was less than $100 (approx. 1%). Good Luck. |
I like my Better Cables. The prices have gone up quite a bit since
I bought mine, though. =( www.bettercables.com |
