Looking for DTV receiver with built in CC

I am intested in finding a DirecTV receiver that can decode and
display close caption on a monitor that otherwise does not have
a close caption decoder. Does such a thing exist? Thanks.

I don't know if any DirecTV receivers include this function by
default. (It certainly is feasible.)

I do know that it's possible to modify the software of a first
generation DirecTV TiVo model (Philips DSR6000, Hughes GXCEBOT or Sony
SAT-T60) to do this, but this really isn't worth the trouble for most
people. (especially someone who doesn't already own one of these
units, which sell for significantly more in used condition than the
cost of a new second generation model)

In my assessment, your best bet is to purchase a separate closed
caption decoder. (which you could use in conjunction with any DirecTV
receiver, as well as other programming sources) Several inexpensive
boxes (including a couple that are advertised as new) are listed on
eBay:

Good luck! :-)

This must be a video monitor and not a TV?

I thinks that's a standard DirecTV feature.

I hope you won't be too disappointed to learn that feature doesn't exist.

A TV receiver must be designed to display closed captioning. A DirecTV
receiver won't provide CC on a TV set that can't display CC.

Every TV set marketed in the United States is required by law, since
1993, to have a built in CC decoder.

CC is embeded in the video on scan line 21. CC is passed by satellite
and terrestrial boradcasters.

There are special CC decoders available for non CC tv sets. I don't
know about particular models of satellite receivers that have CC
decoders in them.

That isn't quite accurate. The Television Decoder Circuitry Act of
1990 (which took full effect on July 1, 1993) applies only when a
"television picture screen is 13 inches or greater in size."

Not all of them. The small TVs and handhelds do not need them.

I was going on the basis that my Mits. HD DirecTV receiver has an option to
turn CC on and to select from several CC settings, as did the Sony that
proceeded it. When I turn it on, I get closed captions on my TV whether
I've turned CC on the TV or not. If I turn CC on on the TV, I get no closed
captions displayed when switched to any of the inputs connected to the sat
receiver, but I do when the TV is switched to on of the antenna inputs.

It doesn't matter to me one way or the other since I generally don't use
closed captions...

As was written earlier, that applies only to 13" and larger sets.

The original poster "monitor," and not TV set. If it's a monitor, he'll
have to buy a stand alone CC decoder.

They had to move it from where it was originally, which was 16, 17, or
18, which was where Jerrold had their scrambling information for settop
CATV converters.
