DirecTvio and VOIP??
Anyone gotten a DirecTivo to work with any of the VOIP services? I'd
love to drop my POTS line, but I have about 9 months left on the satellite contract. I'm doing an experiment on not letting the Tivo call in, and I'm up to 60+ days, but I keep worrying that its going to put its foot down RSN. So again the question is: Can a VOIP line be used to make the daily telephone call from a Tivo? |
I've been using Vonage without a problem.

The DirecTivo doesn't have drivers for the USB ports, hence no ethernet ;(

I even have caller id working on my HDVR2. You just have to know more than just winblows. Jerry "Ben K." wrote in message ... I already have a wired/wireless home network in place. |

No internal header, which is where the TivoNet cards for first gen units attach. |
This is interesting (pardon my ignorance). I've a lake house (with
cable TV/internet) but no phone (been using cell phone). Been wanting to install DTV with Tivo but figured it wouldn't work without land line. Does DTV's computer see a valid phone number matching your location when your receiver calls in? I've read that you can't register a DTV system with the cell phone because it doesn't generate a caller ID to DTV's computer. Does the Vonage system generate caller ID and verify the physical location of the receiver? On Sun, 19 Oct 2003 08:18:44 -0400, "Fred" wrote: I've been using Vonage without a problem. Does DTV's computer see a valid phone number matching your
location when your receiver calls in? Yes it does BUT if you do not have pro sports channels like Sunday Ticket or order PPV, I hear you do not have to have a phone connected at all in practice because they don't enforce the requirement. I've read that you can't register a DTV system with the cell phone because it doesn't generate a caller ID to DTV's computer. Does the Vonage system generate caller ID and verify the physical location of the receiver? Vonage generates Caller ID but it comes back registered to Vonage and not to your name and because Vonage does not use the same phone number format (area code + prefix + number) but rather just a 10 digit number that can be located anywhere (your number can have NYC area code and be working in California), DirecTV cannot know the physical location of your phone. |
