What is the use of standby?

Aprat from turning the light off, can someone tell me why I would ever put my machine in stand by. Its not recording to a 30 minute buffer in standby or outputting a Video/Audio signal. Thus it: 1. Saves energy 2. It's safer it you were hit with a power glitch. |
It also immediately reinstates Parental Controls -- if you care about such
things. "Jack Zwick" wrote in message ... In article , GaryM wrote: The Tivo manual lists all the things Tivo does in standby mode, which sound like the same thing as when it is running normally. No it's not. This was a surprise but there's nothing it does to sync or otherwise shutdown the filesystem when using the standby feature. |

It's less likely to be writing to the Hard Drive as the 30 minute buffer is off. So unless its fulfilling a request from the To Do list or updating from the Satellite, it isnt writing to the Hard Drive. |

Actually, the standalone units do NOT stop writing the 30-minute buffer in standy mode - only DirectTiVos do. So standalone units are ALWAYS writing to the hard drive, whether in standby mode or not. The ONLY thing that's different vis-a-vis standby with a standalone is that it turns off the video-out circuitry and turns off the lights on the front, I believe. Not sure if the OP was referencing DirectTiVo or standalone. - John |

Live program buffering continues on a Standalone TiVo when the unit is in Standby. The DirecTV DVR disables buffer loading while in Standby. |

The stand-alone does not record suggestions if the remote control has been used in the previous 30 minutes. Putting the TiVo into standby allows suggestions to record immediately. Nick. |

One thing not mentioned is that standalone standby, along with turning off the TiVo video-out circuitry, passes through any original coaxial signal. Thus many people use it to watch a show using the TV's tuner at the same time as the TiVo is using its tuner to record a different show. One way to handle conflicts that works for some folks (depends on your setup)! |
